Day 1: Delhi to Shimla by private cab

Day 2: Shimla sightseeing, at your own pace

A full day in the old summer capital of British India. Ride the pony or yak at Kufri, walk up to Jakhoo Temple for the giant Hanuman statue and the valley view, and spend the evening on The Ridge and Mall Road, where the cafes and the Christ Church facade are made for a slow couple stroll. Day 3: Shimla to Manali through the Kullu valley

After breakfast you drive to Manali, about 250 km and close to 7 hours, tracing the Beas river through Kullu. Day 4: Manali local sightseeing

Manali is the three-night base, and day four stays close in. Start at the Hadimba Devi Temple, a 16th-century wooden shrine in a cedar forest that couples tend to love, then the Manu Temple, the Vashisht hot springs and the cafe lanes of Old Manali. Day 5: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu

The big-scenery day. Solang Valley, about 13 km from town, is the adventure stop for paragliding, zorbing and the ropeway. From here the classic route climbs to Rohtang Pass, but Rohtang needs a permit and stays shut roughly November to May, so the reliable modern alternative your driver can take is the Atal Tunnel. At 9.02 km it is the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet, and it stays open through winter, dropping you into Lahaul at Sissu, about 40 km from Manali. Sissu gives couples a genuine snow-and-waterfall point with no Rohtang permit needed. You pick Solang plus Atal Tunnel and Sissu, or Solang plus Rohtang in season, and your private cab makes either swap on the day. Overnight in Manali.

Day 6: Manali to Dharamshala

A long, scenic transfer day back down the Kullu valley and across to the Kangra region. The drive runs through Mandi and the Beas gorge, and you reach Dharamshala and McLeodganj by evening. Day 7: McLeodganj sightseeing, then Dalhousie

The morning is for McLeodganj: the Tsuglagkhang complex (the Dalai Lama's temple), Bhagsu waterfall, the old stone church of St John in the Wilderness and the Namgyal Monastery. After lunch your cab transfers you to Dalhousie, about 117 km and 3.5 hours through pine ridges. Dalhousie is a small colonial-era hill town, low-key and romantic, a soft landing for the last night. Day 8: Khajjiar, then Dalhousie to Delhi

On the way out you stop at Khajjiar, the saucer-shaped meadow ringed by cedar that gets called the Mini Switzerland of India, and it is the postcard shot of the whole honeymoon. From there begins the long drive back to Delhi, roughly 576 km and close to 10 hours, or your driver can connect you to a Chandigarh or Delhi airport for an onward flight. 15 to 29 days before departure: part of the advance is retained toward committed bookings.

Best Time to Visit and Where You Stay

For a Himachal honeymoon by road, the sweet spot is mid-March to June, when the valleys are green, the passes are open and the drives are easy. Come December to February if snow is the whole point, but expect Rohtang to be shut and the Atal Tunnel to be your snow route to Sissu.
