Overview
Hemkund Sahib, or Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib Ji as it was earlier called, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India. The Sanskrit word Hemkund literally translates to “bowl of ice”, and as the name suggests, this picturesque hill station located at an elevation of 4,632 meters above the sea level flaunts a breathtakingly splendid glacial lake at the heart of it, colloquially referred to as the Lokpal Lake. The shimmering water of the lake acts as the centerpiece of Hemkund Sahib, with seven snow-covered mountain peaks of the Himalayan ranges encircling its perimeter, each peak crowned with a holy Nishan Sahib. The peaks are collectively referred to as Hemkund Parvat.
Hemkund Sahib finds mention in two significant Sikh scriptures, the Guru Granth Sahib and the Dasam Granth, the latter was supposedly composed by Guru Govind Singh himself. The Dasam Granth also says that Pandu Raja had practiced and refined the traditional Yoga at this very location. On this journey you will also get to visit two of the so-called spiritual capitals of India, Haridwar and Rishikesh. Practically populated with shrines and temples, Haridwar serves as the gateway to most of the sacred pilgrimage journeys in India. The Ganga Arti at the renowned Har Ki Pauri ghat in Haridwar is a spectacle that no one would want to miss. You can also bathe in the holy water of the river Ganga and freshen up your mind for the journey that lay ahead. The almost divine tranquility of Rishikesh has drawn sages and ascetics for several centuries, who are said to have practiced and perfected the art of Yoga in the dense woods of Rishikesh. The vibrant green groves and the grass-covered mountains of Rishikesh will soothe your eyes. Rishikesh boasts numerous ashrams devoted to Yoga, it is renowned all over the world as the Yoga capital of the world. Every year during the month of March, International Yoga Festival is celebrated with pomp in Rishikesh over the course of one week.
