The Tigra Dam was constructed in 1915 and failed in the afternoon of August 19, 1917, due to infiltration into its sandstone foundations, and 1000 people were killed in this failure. The following succeeding structure again failed in 1970. This Dam is constructed near the 11 villages of Gwalior, which highly depend on it for their day-to-day needs, land irrigation, and drinking water. Likewise, the dam also supplies drinking water to Gwalior city.

Tigra Dam was constructed in the Ghati Gaon of Gwalior, and after construction, the dam became a suitable habitat for several animals and birds. This is why, in 1981, Ghatigaon Wildlife Sanctuary was formed here. The people who resided around the dam were relocated to their new residences. The dam is also beneficial in stream control, deterrence of floods, and water for irrigation. However, some environmentalists still believe that dams are harmful to our environment. They cause land loss, water logging, relocation of people, or silt appearance. Apart from this, the Dam is still a significant source of tourism in Madhya Pradesh.
