The name of Lake Tsomgo is derived from two Bhutia words – Tso, which means lake in English and go, which means head. According to the legend, several years ago, there was a shelter for yaks in the place of Tsangu Lake, where several yak herders lived along with their yaks. Once, an old yak herder woman had a dream in which she was asked to vacate the place immediately since it would soon be filled with water. She followed the instructions, but her fellow herders did not believe her and refused to leave the area.
As the old yak herder woman left the area, an old woman with pearl-white hair was seen entering the valley. Soon, the place was filled with water, and the herders who refused to leave the area drowned. To this day, the old woman with white hair is said to be the guardian spirit of the lake. Since then, the lake has been called Tsomgo Lake and is also known as Tsangu Lake.

The nearest airport to Gangtok and Tsangu Lake is Pakyong (Sikkim), about 32 km from Gangtok. One can easily take a drive from Gangtok to reach the lake.
