Day-by-Day Itinerary: Kandy, Bentota and Colombo

Day 1: Airport to Kandy via Pinnawala, evening at the Temple of the Tooth

Your driver meets you outside arrivals at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, and your private air-conditioned car heads inland towards Kandy, the last royal capital of the Sinhalese kings and the gateway to Sri Lanka's hill country.

En route to Kandy, visit Pinnawala, a village in Kegalle District about two hours from the airport. Its Elephant Orphanage is believed to hold the largest herd of elephants in captivity in the world. Time it right and you will see the herd walk down the village road to bathe in the Maha Oya river.

You reach Kandy by late afternoon. Check in, unwind, then take the Upper Lake drive around Kandy Lake before heading to the Temple of the Tooth Relic for the evening puja, when the drummers start and the inner shrine opens. A Kandyan dance performance near the lake makes a good add-on (tickets are paid locally). Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees at the temple, and you will leave your shoes at the entrance. Dinner tonight is at a place of your choice.

Overnight in Kandy. Distance is about 115 km, roughly 3.5 hours on the road plus 1 to 1.5 hours at Pinnawala, so allow about 5 hours.

Day 2: Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, then down to Bentota beach

Enjoy breakfast and check out. Your first stop is about 3 km down the Peradeniya Road, the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. Give it an hour. The palm avenues, the orchid house and the giant Java fig on the great lawn are where couples end up lingering. Today's drive is the longest of the trip, about 180 km and 4.5 to 5 hours, so the car leaves straight after the gardens. On the way out of the hills you stop at a spice garden to see how cinnamon, cardamom and pepper grow, and you can buy them fresh. Bentota sits where the Bentota River meets the sea, and its golden beach faces due west. Check in, change, and be on the sand by 5 pm for the sunset. If you still have energy, the river mouth runs jet skis, banana boats and windsurfing (paid locally). The Kosgoda turtle hatchery, 20 minutes south, closes around 5:30 pm, so if you want to see it, ask your driver to stop there on the Day 3 drive to the Madu River (entry paid locally).

Overnight in Bentota.

Day 3: Madu River boat ride, Colombo city tour and Galle Face Green

Take a slow breakfast, then drive 20 minutes south to Balapitiya for a boat ride on the Madu River (Madu Ganga). The boat slips through mangrove tunnels to a small cinnamon island where a family still peels the bark by hand. Plan on about 90 minutes on the water. The boat fee is paid locally.

From here it is about 2 hours north to Colombo, Sri Lanka's commercial capital (the official capital, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, sits on the city's edge). You reach the hotel in the early afternoon. After check-in, a short city tour takes in Gangaramaya Temple, Viharamahadevi Park and Independence Square, and ends at Galle Face Green as the sun drops into the sea. Want the National Museum or the Fort district as well? Skip the Madu River boat in the morning and you will have time for both. Families fly kites there and hawkers fry isso wade, the local prawn fritters, along the promenade.

Odel, House of Fashion and Majestic City are a short ride from Galle Face if you want to shop for batiks, Ceylon tea and sarees tonight. Otherwise leave it for the morning.

Overnight in Colombo.

Day 4: Colombo to Bandaranaike International Airport

Have breakfast and check out. If your flight leaves after 3 pm, the morning is free for Pettah market, which is good for tea and spices, or Odel for batik and Sri Lankan labels. Your driver then takes you about 35 km north to Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, 45 to 60 minutes on the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway. Reach the terminal 3 hours before an international departure. Your honeymoon ends with a Kandy temple evening, a Bentota sunset and a Colombo city night behind you.

This package starts at Rs 23,799 per person on twin sharing, which is Rs 47,598 for a couple, for travel in November 2026. The price is land-only, so you book flights from India yourself or ask your agent to add them. Rates move with the month. December to April is peak season on the west coast and costs more. May to September is cheaper because of the monsoon.

Good to Know for Indian Couples

Visa (ETA)

Indian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before flying to Sri Lanka. You apply online at eta.gov.lk, each partner separately, a few days before you fly. The tourist ETA covers a 30-day stay. It has been free for Indian nationals since 25 May 2026, but Sri Lanka has switched between free and paid ETAs more than once, so check the fee on eta.gov.lk when you apply. Flights from India

Colombo is about 1.5 hours from Chennai and Bengaluru, about 2.5 hours from Mumbai and about 3.5 hours from Delhi, with SriLankan Airlines, IndiGo and Air India on the route. Pick an arrival before noon so Day 1 has time for Pinnawala and the Kandy evening.

Money, phones and plugs

The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Hotels and malls take cards, but carry cash for tuk-tuks, temple tickets and the boat ride. A local SIM from the arrivals hall costs far less than international roaming. Sockets are mostly the three-pin Type D and Type G, so pack a universal adapter.

Best time for this route

December to March is the classic honeymoon window for Sri Lanka, and on this route April is good too. Kandy is pleasant all year, so the sea at Bentota decides your dates.
