Kashmir Tour in August: 5N/6D Overview
August is green season in Kashmir. The snow has gone from Gulmarg's meadows, the Lidder river in Pahalgam runs at full flow, and Srinagar's Mughal gardens are still in bloom while the plains swelter. This 5 nights 6 days Kashmir tour in August covers Srinagar, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Gulmarg, with a night on a Dal Lake houseboat to finish. It is planned around the two things that make August different, the Amarnath Yatra convoys and the 15 August long weekend, so your excursions start early and your Gondola ride does not get squeezed into a travel day.
Afternoons run warm at about 28 to 31°C in Srinagar and a cooler 20 to 23°C in Gulmarg, and the rain comes as short showers rather than a full monsoon, because the Pir Panjal range keeps most of it out of the valley. You stay 2 nights in a 3-star hotel in Srinagar, a night each in Pahalgam and Gulmarg, and the last night on a houseboat with a shikara ride included. If you want more choice of duration or hotel class, every other trip is on our Kashmir tour packages page, and the Srinagar-only version of this month is the Srinagar tour in August.
From Rs 14,878 per person on twin sharing (3-star, land package), against a listed Rs 15,998. You can change any day, hotel or the order of the route before you pay, and compare quotes from up to 3 verified local agents.

Is August a Good Time for a Kashmir Tour?
Yes, for greenery, lakes and easy sightseeing, and no if you want snow. August sits after the May and June peak and before the autumn colours, so the valleys are at their greenest and the Gondola queues are shorter than in early summer. You get about 13 hours of daylight and sunsets around 7 pm, which leaves room for a shikara ride after a full sightseeing day.
Two things need planning. The Amarnath Yatra uses Pahalgam and Sonamarg as base towns until Raksha Bandhan, and the Independence Day weekend fills Srinagar and Gulmarg hotels fast. Both are covered in the sections below, and both are already built into the itinerary. If your dates are flexible, the weeks after the Yatra closes are the quietest of the summer. Travellers who prefer the earlier or later window can compare the Kashmir tour in July and the Kashmir tour in September.
Kashmir Weather in August: Srinagar, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Gulmarg
The higher you go on this route, the cooler it gets, by roughly 6 to 8°C between Srinagar and Gulmarg. Here is what to expect at each overnight stop and day trip.
| Place (altitude) | Day | Night | Rain | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Srinagar (about 1,585 m) | 28 to 31°C | 16 to 18°C | About 65 mm in the month, short showers | Warmest stop. Gardens and shikara at their best in the evening |
| Sonamarg (about 2,740 m) | 20 to 23°C | 7 to 10°C | Occasional showers | Thajiwas Glacier still has ice. Yatra traffic towards Baltal |
| Pahalgam (about 2,130 m) | 23 to 26°C | 10 to 13°C | Occasional showers | Lidder at full flow, rafting season |
| Gulmarg (about 2,650 m) | 20 to 23°C | 9 to 12°C | Afternoon showers | Green meadow. Snow patches only at Apharwat (Gondola Phase 2) |
Snow in Kashmir in August exists only at altitude: on Apharwat near the top of the Gondola, on the Thajiwas Glacier, and on passes such as Zojila beyond Sonamarg. Srinagar, Pahalgam town and the Gulmarg meadow are snow-free. For the full month-by-month picture, see our guide to the best time to visit Kashmir.
6 Days Kashmir in August Itinerary with Distances and Drive Times
The table gives the road distance and drive time for each day. There is no direct road from Pahalgam to Gulmarg, so Day 4 runs back through Srinagar, and the Gondola sits on the Day 5 morning so the long drive does not eat into it.
| Day | Plan | Distance and drive | Night |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive Srinagar, Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashme Shahi, Hazratbal | Airport to hotel about 14 km, 30 to 45 min | Hotel, Srinagar |
| 2 | Sonamarg day trip, Thajiwas Glacier by pony or on foot | About 80 km, 2.5 to 3 hrs each way | Hotel, Srinagar |
| 3 | Drive to Pahalgam via Pampore and Avantipora, Lidder River, Betaab and Aru valleys | About 95 km, 2.5 to 3 hrs | Hotel, Pahalgam |
| 4 | Pahalgam to Gulmarg via Srinagar and Tangmarg, meadow walk | About 140 to 150 km, 4 to 5 hrs | Hotel, Gulmarg |
| 5 | Gulmarg Gondola in the morning, drive to Srinagar, houseboat and shikara | About 50 km, 1.5 to 2 hrs | Houseboat, Dal Lake |
| 6 | Shankaracharya viewpoint or old-city shopping, departure | About 14 km to the airport | Home |
Kashmir Tour in August Itinerary in Detail
Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar, Mughal Gardens and Hazratbal
You land at Srinagar Airport, where our driver meets you and takes you to your hotel near Dal Lake, about 30 to 45 minutes away. After check-in and a short rest, drive to the Mughal gardens on the Zabarwan foothills, 10 to 15 km from the hotel. Nishat Bagh has twelve terraces dropping to the lake, Shalimar Bagh was built by Jahangir, and Chashme Shahi is fed by a cold spring. Entry fees are paid at each gate. In August the flower beds are full and the light holds until about 7 pm, so there is time for the white-marble Hazratbal Shrine on the northern shore of Dal Lake before you head back for dinner and the night at the hotel.
Day 2: Sonamarg Day Trip and Thajiwas Glacier
Leave Srinagar by 7:30 am after an early breakfast. Sonamarg, the Golden Meadow, is about 80 km and 2.5 to 3 hours up the Sindh valley. The early start matters in August, because Sonamarg is the last town before the Baltal base camp of the Amarnath Yatra and pilgrim convoys get right of way on this road while the Yatra runs. From the meadow, hire a pony or walk the 3 km to the Thajiwas Glacier, where ice still lies in the gullies in late summer. Ponies are paid on the spot at the union rate, so agree the price before you get on. The river is fast and clear and the pine slopes are at their greenest. You are back at the Srinagar hotel by evening for dinner and the night.
Day 3: Srinagar to Pahalgam, Betaab and Aru Valleys
Check out after breakfast for the 95 km drive to Pahalgam, 2.5 to 3 hours of driving, or 3 to 4 hours with stops. Within half an hour you pass the saffron fields of Pampore, bare in August because the crocus only flowers in late October, then the 9th-century stone ruins of Avantipora and the cricket-bat workshops at Sangam. In Pahalgam, walk along the Lidder river, at full flow in August and at its best for white-water rafting (extra cost). Package cabs cannot go beyond town, so local union taxis run to Betaab Valley and Aru Valley at a fixed rate per vehicle. Chandanwari is the start of the Amarnath Yatra trek, and tourist access there is limited while the Yatra is on. Once the Yatra closes, it reopens as a day trip. Dinner and the night are at your Pahalgam hotel.
Day 4: Pahalgam to Gulmarg via Srinagar
Check out after an early breakfast and leave by 8 am. There is no direct road between Pahalgam and Gulmarg, so today's drive runs back through Srinagar and up through Tangmarg, about 140 to 150 km and 4 to 5 hours with a tea stop. You reach Gulmarg by early afternoon. After check-in formalities, walk out onto the meadow, which in August is green from end to end and dotted with wildflowers, past the golf course to St. Mary's Church, built in 1902. Afternoon showers are common up here, so keep the rain shell handy. Get back to the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay, and keep your Gondola tickets downloaded for the morning.
Day 5: Gulmarg Gondola, Srinagar and Houseboat Stay
Be at the Gondola base right after breakfast, when the queues are shortest and the views clearest. The Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, runs in 2 phases. Phase 1 climbs to Kongdori at about 3,080 m, and Phase 2 continues to Apharwat at close to 4,000 m, where snow patches often survive into August. Tickets are not included; book them online in advance on the official J&K Cable Car Corporation portal. By early afternoon, drive back to Srinagar, about 50 km and 1.5 to 2 hours, and check in to your houseboat. If there is time before sunset, shop at Lal Chowk or Polo View. The included shikara ride goes out in the evening, past the floating gardens as the lake turns gold. Dinner and the night are on the houseboat.
Day 6: Departure from Srinagar
Have breakfast on the houseboat deck, then take the shikara back to the ghat. With an afternoon flight, you have time to drive up to the Shankaracharya Temple viewpoint for the widest view of Dal Lake, or to shop in the old city for pashmina, papier-mâché, walnut wood and saffron. Srinagar airport has layered security checks that start at the outer gate, so plan to reach it 2.5 hours before your flight. Your driver drops you at the airport in time for check-in.
Things to Do in Kashmir in August on This Trip
Most of what makes August worth it is paid on the spot, so here is what each activity involves and whether it is in the package price.
| Activity | Where and when | In the package? | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shikara ride | Dal Lake, Day 5 evening | Yes | Longer rides and the dawn floating market are paid to the boatman |
| Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 and 2 | Gulmarg, Day 5 morning | No | About Rs 700 to Rs 810 and Rs 900 to Rs 1,010 per person (2026), book online |
| Pony to Thajiwas Glacier | Sonamarg, Day 2 | No | Union rate, agree before you start. The 3 km walk is free |
| Union taxi to Betaab and Aru | Pahalgam, Day 3 | No | Fixed rate per vehicle, shared by your group |
| Lidder river rafting | Pahalgam, Day 3 | No | August is peak flow. Life jackets provided by registered operators |
| Trout fishing | Lidder at Pahalgam | No | Needs a permit from the J&K Fisheries Department |
| Mughal gardens | Srinagar, Day 1 | No (entry fees) | Small gate fee at each garden |
Want an extra day? Doodhpathri, about 42 km from Srinagar, is the easiest add-on in August: a quiet, grassy plateau with streams and almost no Yatra traffic. Ask the agent to add it as a sixth night when you customise.
Amarnath Yatra, 15 August and Crowds: What to Expect
The Amarnath Yatra and your August trip
The Amarnath Yatra starts from two base camps on this circuit: Nunwan and Chandanwari near Pahalgam, and Baltal beyond Sonamarg. In 2026 the Yatra ran from 3 July to Raksha Bandhan on 28 August, and it closes on Raksha Bandhan every year, which in 2027 falls in mid-August. While it runs, pilgrim convoys get right of way on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads, there are extra checkpoints, and tourist access to Chandanwari is limited.
This itinerary handles it with early starts on Days 2 and 3, Betaab and Aru valleys instead of Chandanwari while the Yatra is on, and the Gondola on a non-travel morning. Keep a government photo ID in your day bag; you will be asked for it.
Kashmir on the 15 August long weekend
In 2027, 15 August falls on a Sunday and Raksha Bandhan is expected on Tuesday 17 August, so there is no ready-made long weekend. A 13 to 18 August departure works best for this trip. It needs three days of leave (Friday 13, Monday 16 and Wednesday 18), plus Tuesday 17 if Raksha Bandhan is not a holiday where you work, and it puts the morning of the 15th on the road to Pahalgam, away from central Srinagar, where security is tightest during the official function. These are still the busiest days of the month, and Srinagar and Gulmarg hotels fill 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Book early to hold the package price before the holiday demand pushes rates up.
How crowded is Kashmir in August?
Less crowded than May and June. Outside the long weekend and the final days of the Yatra, Gulmarg and Pahalgam are quieter than in early summer, and you will rarely wait long for the Gondola if you are there at opening time.
Kashmir Tour Package Price in August
The Kashmir tour package in August costs from Rs 14,878 per person on twin sharing with 3-star hotels. That price covers your stay, breakfast and dinner, the private cab, transfers, tolls, fuel and the shikara ride. The table shows what is inside it and what you pay locally.
| Cost item | In the Rs 14,878? | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 4 nights in 3-star hotels + 1 night houseboat | Yes | Twin sharing. 4-star hotels and a deluxe houseboat are quoted on request |
| Breakfast and dinner, all 5 nights | Yes | Lunch is on you, at dhabas and cafes near each stop |
| Private cab, airport transfers, tolls, fuel, driver | Yes | Sedan for 2 to 3 travellers, larger vehicle for bigger groups |
| Shikara ride | Yes | Longer rides are paid to the boatman |
| Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 + Phase 2 | No | About Rs 1,600 to Rs 1,820 per person for both phases (2026) |
| Union taxis and ponies (Thajiwas, Betaab, Aru) | No | Fixed union rates, paid in cash |
| Entry fees, rafting, guide charges | No | Paid locally |
| Flights to Srinagar | No | Agents can add them to your quote |
August is shoulder season, so the land price sits below the May and June peak. The exception is the 15 August weekend, when hotels in Srinagar and Gulmarg charge more. Mid-month weekdays outside the long weekend are the best value.
Hotels and Houseboat in This Package
Your agent books these hotels or similar ones, depending on availability.
| Nights | Property (or similar) | Where |

| Night 3 | Lidder Spring Resorts (3-star) | Yanner Bridge, Movra, Pahalgam 192126 |
| Night 4 | Khaleel Palace (3-star) | Alambal Road, near Gondola, Gulmarg 193403 |
| Night 5 | Deluxe houseboat | Dal Lake, Srinagar |
Ask your agent to share the confirmed hotel names and booking references a week before you fly, and check that hot water and room heating work on arrival in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, where nights drop to about 10°C even in August.

What to Pack for Kashmir in August
Pack for two climates: summer in Srinagar and early autumn in Gulmarg and Sonamarg.
- Light cottons for the day and one fleece or light jacket for the evenings in Gulmarg and Pahalgam
- A compact rain shell or umbrella for the afternoon showers
- Walking shoes with grip; the meadows and the Thajiwas trail stay wet after rain
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap, since the sun is strong at 2,000 m and above
- A postpaid SIM, a power bank and offline maps
- Printed and digital government photo ID for hotels, houseboats and Yatra-season checkpoints
- Motion-sickness tablets for the Sonamarg and Tangmarg roads, and cash for ponies and union taxis
Booking and Payment
You confirm the trip with a booking amount and pay the rest in installments, as agreed with your travel agent before you pay. Because August trips can be affected by landslides on the Sonamarg road or Yatra-day restrictions, ask your agent to confirm in writing how a road closure is handled, such as a swapped excursion or a changed day order.
