Snuggled at the foot of Taragarh Hill, Khwaja Garib Nawaz Dargah is one of the most celebrated tombs in Ajmer, Rajasthan.

This tomb dedicated to a Sufi saint- Moinuddin Chisty- is the most revered Sufi shrines not only in the state of Rajasthan but also throughout the country. Also referred to as Dargah Sharif, Ajmer Dargah Sharif, Ajmer Sharif, this shrine is visited by a huge flock of devotees. And, the interesting part is the list of devotees does not only consist of people of Muslim religion but also a horde of Hindus who believe in the teachings of Moinuddin Hasan Chisti, who later became famous with the name of Khwaja Garib Nawaz for being the preacher of humanity.

History of Khwaja Garib Nawaz Dargah

Born in Chisti, Afghanistan, Khwaja Moinuddin holds a prominent place amongst the greatest spiritual leaders of the world. Not influenced by the material things, he came to India and settled in Ajmer to teach why mankind is the best way of high living. The spectacular Ajmer Sharif Dargah is the tomb of a popular Sufi saint, called Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti who dedicated his entire life for the welfare of the oppressed and poor people. And, the dargah is the resting place where he rests after death. Drawing a large number of followers, including kings and people of higher rankings, he practiced his teachings while focusing on the unity of Hindu and Muslim communities.

Meaning of Khwaja Garib Nawaz: Khwaja Garib Nawaz was a Sufi saint who came from Persia to India. The Khwaja Garib Nawaz Dargah belongs to this Sufi saint only and hence it has been named after him. 

Architecture of Khwaja Garib Nawaz ki Dargah:

The architecture of the Khwaja Garib Nawaz ki Dargah has been inspired from the Mughal architecture. The tomb has been entirely constructed in white marble. Some main structures inside the Dargah are Begami Dalaan, Nizam gate, Aulia Masjid, Jama Masjid, Victoria Hauz and many others. Buland Darwaza is the main gate to enter the dargah which is huge. Inside the courtyard, there are massive cauldrons that have been placed which are used for cooking food on various special occasions.

The 6 days death ceremony of the Sufi saint is also a very famous event that takes place at the Dargah. As it is said the saint locked himself up for 6 days before his death, therefore this death ceremony is celebrated here for 6 days. Kheer is cooked in big cauldrons on this day which is distributed among people.

Murderer turning into a Devotee: Yes, it is true, legends have that a murderer turned into a devotee under the influence of Saint. He came to murder the saint on orders of some people who wanted to kill the saint. With intuitive powers, the saint came to know about the evil plans of the murderer. The man prayed to the saint and apologize and saint forgave him. This made him the follower of Islam and also a devotee of the saint.

Built with white marbles, the Khwaja Garib Nawaz Dargah consists of two courtyards and a massive gate, which was donated by the Nizam of Hyderabad.

Facts About Ajmer Sharif Dargah

In the year 1332, it is said that Muhammad Bin Tughlaq was the first person to visit the dargah.

Mehfil-e-sama is a hall inside the dargah where qawwalis are sung every day after the reading of namaz.

There are two massive cauldrons inside the dargah which are used for cooking of kheer on special occasions.

You will find Quran verses inscribed on the walls of the dargah along with the names of Allah.
