Getting to Kashmir from Delhi: Flight, Train or Road

Most travellers fly. Nonstop Delhi to Srinagar flights take about 1 hour 30 minutes and leave through the day, so a morning departure puts you at the hotel by lunch and leaves the whole afternoon for the city. The rail route has been open since June 2025, but there is no through train yet. You ride the Vande Bharat from New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, about 8 hours, then change at Katra to the Jammu Tawi to Srinagar Vande Bharat, about 3 more hours over the Chenab Bridge. By train you reach Srinagar only in the evening, so the Day 1 city tour moves to a later day, or you travel the day before. The Rs 16,800 price is for the land part of the trip. It starts with your pick-up at Srinagar Airport or Srinagar railway station on Day 1 and ends with the drop there on Day 5. Flights or train tickets from Delhi are not included, so either book them yourself or ask the agents to add them, and you get one price for the whole trip.

Kashmir 4 Nights 5 Days Itinerary from Delhi (Day-wise)

Day 1: Delhi → Srinagar | Shankaracharya Temple, Mughal Gardens and Dal Lake

On arrival at Srinagar Airport, about 14 km from Dalgate, your driver meets you and drops you at the hotel. After check-in, the city tour starts with the Shankaracharya temple which stands on Shankaracharya Hill, about 300 m above the city, with the whole Dal Lake laid out below. From there you drive down to the Mughal Garden at Nishat on the lakeside road. Shalimar, a short drive further, and Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal fit in only if you land on a morning flight. The handicraft shops along the way sell pashmina shawls, papier mâché, walnut-wood boxes and carpets, so ask for a fixed price before you choose. In the evening you can explore the local markets alongside the Dal Lake. Dinner and the night are at your hotel.

Day 2: Sonmarg Day Trip | Thajiwas Glacier and the Sindh River

Today you will be taken to explore the meadow of gold, Sonmarg. The road runs about 80 km north-east through Ganderbal and Kangan beside the Sindh River, a drive of 2.5 to 3 hours. You can enjoy fishing in the fast flowing Sindh River which is known for its brown trout in summer, fished on a J&K Fisheries Department permit. You can opt for a pony ride to the Thajiwas Glacier to have some fun in snow and ice. Pony rates are fixed by the local pony association, so agree the price and the route before you mount. The Z-Morh tunnel, open since January 2025, keeps Sonmarg reachable in winter, but heavy snow can still shut the road for a day, and your agent can swap in Doodhpathri if it does. You are back at the Srinagar hotel by evening for dinner and the night.

Day 3: Pahalgam Day Trip | Awantipora Ruins, Saffron Fields and the Lidder River

After breakfast, you will leave for Pahalgam, the valley of shepherds, which is situated at the confluence of the streams flowing from river Lidder and Sheeshnag Lake. The drive is about 95 km. On the way you can seek blessings by visiting the Awantipora ruins, an 1100 year old temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and built by King Awantivarman, and pass the saffron fields of Pampore, which flower purple in late October and early November. On arrival into Pahalgam enjoy the surrounding beauty along the Lidder, and walk through the small village set in pine and fir forest. The Baisaran meadow above the town has stayed closed to visitors since April 2025. Betaab Valley and Aru are open, Chandanwari opens when snow and security allow, and you reach them only in a local union taxi hired at the Pahalgam stand, paid separately. Day 4: Gulmarg Day Trip | Gondola, Golf Course, then a Night on the Dal Lake Houseboat

Enjoy a morning drive to Gulmarg after breakfast and check-out from the hotel. The route from Srinagar runs about 50 km through Tangmarg and the last stretch climbs through pine forest, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours in all. From December to March Gulmarg is a ski resort, with gear and instructors for hire at the base. The rest of the year you walk the meadow around the 18-hole golf course and ride the Gondola cable car. Phase 1 climbs to Kongdori and Phase 2 continues to Apharwat Peak, near 4,000 m. Tickets are sold online only, so book them on the J&K Cable Car Corporation site as soon as your dates are fixed (fares and booking tips are in our Gulmarg Gondola guide). When snow covers the road from November to March, the last leg from Tangmarg needs a chained vehicle at extra cost. After enjoying the day return to Srinagar, check in to the houseboat for dinner and your night on the lake.

Day 5: Dal Lake Shikara and Srinagar → Delhi

If you did not use your complimentary 1-hour shikara ride on Day 1, take it this morning from the houseboat ghat. Go early, between 6 and 7 am, for still water and the morning light on the lake. The floating vegetable market, where boatmen trade lotus stems and greens straight off their boats around dawn, sits in the inner channels and needs a longer early ride of about 2 hours, so ask your agent to arrange it if you want to see it. After breakfast, check out from the houseboat. Your driver drops you at Srinagar Airport, about 15 km away, for your flight home to Delhi, or at Srinagar railway station if you go home by rail. The Vande Bharat to Katra and Jammu Tawi leaves around 8 am, so rail travellers take their shikara on Day 1 and plan an onward connection to Delhi from Katra or Jammu. Reach the airport 2.5 to 3 hours before departure, because cars are checked at the outer gate before you reach the terminal, and you are back in Delhi about 1.5 hours after take-off.

• Pahalgam runs on local union taxis beyond the town. Your package cab drops you in town, and the cab for Betaab Valley, Aru or Chandanwari is hired and paid at the stand.

• Gondola tickets are online only. Book Phase 1 and Phase 2 as soon as your dates are fixed, since Phase 2 has fewer seats.

• Agree pony and sledge rates before you start, in Sonmarg and Gulmarg alike.

• Prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in the valley. Carry a postpaid connection.

• Carry a government photo ID. Hotels, houseboats and checkpoints ask for it.
