About Tarkarli

Tarkarli is known for long stretches of white sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters. The water is so crystal clear that one can see marine life upto a depth of 20 feet. It is known for water activities like snorkelling, scuba diving and zorbing. It is a protected region fordolphins and sea turtles. The main occupation is fishing and the local fishermen go out in the sea except monsoons. It is all weather favourite getaway and best time to visit is between October and March. Ramnavmi Utsav is clebrated in Tarkarli with great fun and gusto. Tarkarli is famous for Malvani food especially fish items. From Tarkarli one can have a glimpse of Sindhudurg Fort constructed by Shivaji Maharaj. Road connectivity to Tarkarli is quite manageable and visitors can take a bus from Malvan. Tarkarli is famous in history owing to association with Shivaji Maharaj who wanted to build an invincible fort on an island with an appreciable distance from Janjira Fort. So he chose the island of Kurte for it and made a fort with a sprawling area of 48 acres specifically meant to keep enemies at bay. The fort was built in the 17th century and was named as Sindhudurg Fort also known as Malvan Fort. Sindhudurg Fort is an impressive and famous tourist destination.
MALVAN: is a famous village where people speak a mix of Marathi and Konkani languages. It is famous for marine sanctuary that spreads over a region of 29. 25 sq km with wide variety of corals and other marine creatures. Other attractions include the Rock Garden, Ganesh Mandir, Chivla, ArseMahal, Tondavali Beach and the Rameshwar Temple.
TARKARLI BEACH: located 6 km on the south of Malvan and 546 km from Mumbai. The beach is famous owing to crystal clear water and deep sea bed. Accomodation options are available in theform of MTDC cottages which provide facility for houseboats and other recreational activities.
SINDHUDURG FORT: said to be built under the close supervision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with the assistance of 100 Portugese architects and 1000 workers. The fort took three years to complete from 1664-67. The foundation was enriched with 4000 mounds of iron and spread over 50 acres of land.  The fort houses temples of Goddess Bhawani and Lord Hanuman. The rampart of the fort consist of 42 bastions and it boasts of a height of 4km.
PADMAGARH FORT: was set up to strengthen the outer defenses of Sindhudurg and was the ship building base of the navy of Shivaji.
DHAMAPUR LAKE: covers an area of 10 acres and offers water sports facilites. Since the lake is free from extreme wave it is suitable for adventure free baoting.  A temple of Goddess Bhagwati is present in the area of the lake. The lake comprises of crystal clear waters with hills encompassing both sides along with dense plantation of mango, coconut and areca palms. MTDC offers facilities for boating and relaxing in the huts surrounding the lake.
Deobagh in literal terms implies garden of gods but is a simple village of fishermen engaged into tourism activities by offering their boats. Dolphins are a common sight in this area.
Achra Beach is located about 6km to the town of Malvan and the clear waters and high waves along with adventure sports are the main attraction of this beach. Achra also consists of a 260 year old Rameshwar Temple and 115 year old library. The nearby village of Achra is known for healing treatments along with farming.
Kolamb Beach is located 6km to the southern part to the town of Malvan and the beach is famous for dolphins and clear waters that offer adventure sports.
Shiv Chhatrapati Temple: The temple is dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj and was built by Rajaram. The temple was built in 1695 on Sindhudurg. Shivaji is present in the temple in Yogic Veerasan pose. Next to the Dilli gate on the tower are the two domes with Shivaji's footprints along with palm prints on dried lime slabs.
