Best Tourist Places To Explore In Patiala
Patiala Tour Packages have been designed comprising the best attractions. Below are some of the popular places you must explore during your trip to Patiala:
1. Qila Mubarak
What’s Special: Historical monument
Timings: Tuesday-Sunday, 9 am-5 pm. Closed on Mondays.
Transportation Option: Auto, cab
Built by the founder of the Patiala dynasty Ala Singh, Qila Mubarak was merely a mud fortress in 1763. Later on, it got reconstructed with baked bricks.
This 10-acre complex consists of Qila Androon (the interior portion of Qila Mubarak), Ran Baas (Guest house), Divan Khana (Darbar Hall), and an underground sewerage system. Qila Androon, built by Maharaja Amar Singh, has 13 royal chambers from Hindu mythology, painted in the Patiala art style.
2. Gurudwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib
What’s Special: Spiritual significance
Timings: Monday-Sunday, 24/7
Transportation Option: Cab, rickshaw, auto
This religious place has a history associated with it. Many years ago, the city’s inhabitants were going through some mysterious sickness. Guru Teg Bahadur Singh (ninth guru of the Sikhs) blessed this village by staying in meditation by the side of the pond, under a banyan tree. The sickness in the village subsided, and the site of Guruji’s samadhi came to be known as Dukh Niwaran, literally meaning ‘eradicator of suffering.’ Devotees have faith in the healing qualities of the Sarovar attached to this famous shrine.
3. Adalat Bazar
What’s Special: Shopping destination
Timings: Monday-Sunday, 10 am-8 pm
Transportation Option: Rickshaw, auto
Adalat Bazar offers the best retail therapy amidst a visit to historical places. This marketplace has handcrafted Phulkari dupattas, lehengas, and juttis. Treat yourself to lip-smacking street food like Kulchas, Chole Bhature, Kachoris, Paranthas, and Lassi.
4. Baradari Gardens
What’s Special: Wide variety of flora
Timings: Monday-Sunday, 5 am-11:55 pm
Transportation Option: Cab, rickshaw, auto
As the name suggests, Baradari Garden means a garden with 12 gates. Situated near the Baradari Palace, it was built under the reign of Maharaja Rajinder Singh. It is one of Patiala’s main attractions and comprises rare trees, shrubs, and flowers. It was a part of the royal residence with a skating rink, a cricket stadium, and a small palace named Rajinder Kothi. Residents of all age groups come here for a walk, run and practice yoga.
5. Shri Kali Devi Temple
What’s Special: Sacred spot
Timings: Monday-Sunday, 5 am-9 pm
Transportation Option: Auto, cab, rickshaw
In 1936, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was inspired to build Shri Kali Devi Temple and brought the 6 feet idol of Kali maa and Paawan Jyoti (Sacred fire) from Bengal to Patiala. The first sacrifice (bali) to the temple was a water buffalo. An older temple of Raj Rajeshwari, a Hindu deity, also stands in the middle of the temple complex. Devotees offer bangles, chunni, daal, mustard oil, etc. to the idol of Kali maa.
6. Sheesh Mahal
What’s Special: Mirror Work, frescoes, bridge
Timings: Tuesday-Sunday 10:30 am-5 pm. Closed on Mondays.
Transportation Option: Cab
Situated behind the Moti Bagh Palace, a section of the Sheesh Mahal is embellished with colored glass and mirror work. Hence, it is also known as the ‘Palace of Mirrors.’ Built under the reign of Maharaja Narinder Singh, most frescoes (a technique of mural painting) were painted in the Mahal by the artists. The museum here houses an enormous collection of medals from the world, collected by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.
Earlier, there used to be a lake on the front side of the palace, but now it has dried up. Lachman Jhoola (not to be confused with the one in Rishikesh), a bridge built across the now-dried lake, adds to the beauty of the Mahal. As of now, the museum and the main building are closed for public viewing because of renovations. However, tourists can access the surroundings of the Mahal together with Lachman Jhoola.
7. Patiala Zoo/ Patiala Bir
What’s Special: Intriguing fauna
Timings: Tuesday-Sunday, 9 am-5 pm. Closed on Mondays.
Transportation Option: Cab
Patiala Zoo, also known as Patiala Bir or Deer Park, is a preserved forest and a Wildlife Sanctuary. This zoo houses species like Monkeys, Parakeets, Deer, Cockatiels, Rabbits, Painted Storks, Blackbucks, Crocodiles, Red Jungle Fowls, and many more. It is a must-visit place in Patiala sightseeing tour for photography lovers.
Best Time To Visit Patiala
March to May
The summers in Patiala make it difficult to enjoy local sightseeing. Visitors avoid planning a vacation here during this season because of the high temperature leading to scorching heat.
June to September
The monsoon season in Patiala emerges in June and fades away towards the end of September. Although there is a fall in temperature compared to summers, a majority of travelers usually avoid visiting Patiala during monsoons because of the humidity and heavy rainfall.
October to February
It is the best time to visit Patiala, as winters are pleasant and suitable for local sightseeing. However, January is a month during which people avoid a trip to Patiala because of the extremely chilly weather.
How To Reach Patiala?
By Air
Punjab has well-established airports located in Amritsar, Chandigarh and Ludhiana. Both airports are interconnected to many cities in India so you can board a flight to any of these airports. However, it is best if you board a flight to either Chandigarh Airport or Ludhiana Airport and then take a cab to Patiala.
By Rail
Depending on the days of their run, 16 trains stop by Patiala Railway Station. However, if your train doesn’t halt at Patiala Railway Station, other nearby railway stations include Rajpura Junction Railway Station and Nabha Railway Station.
By Road
Patiala has a well-connected inter-state bus terminal. Regardless of the starting point of your journey, the interconnected roads will lead you to Patiala. Patiala Bus Stand is at a distance of 100-150 meters from Patiala Railway Station.
