Bhutan Adventure Guide
Behind the calm and serene ambiance that Bhutan is so well-known for, there is a crazy wild side of the country too that few people know about. When the monasteries and temples and historical sites are all done and dusted with, the majestic mountains and green valleys are destinations for the best Bhutan adventure tours. The land of the Thunder Dragons is a paradise for the adrenaline junkies, offering one adventure opportunities after the other.
Here is a list of the exciting adventure sports in Bhutan that one can participate in:
1. Trekking
Trekking in Bhutan is the best adventure activities that the country has to offer. The passes and trails through the snow-crested mountains are gorgeous in their own rights. Whether one gets to summit the trek or not, the journey itself is worth all the time and effort – so brilliant is the ambiance along the trekking routes in Bhutan. However, two of these routes have the most challenging yet breathtaking experience – the Jomolhari trek and the climb of Dochula Pass. The former one takes the trekkers through Jigme Dorji National Park to the summit with a spectacular view of the majestic Jomolhari peak (7326 m). Dochula Pass takes them to 10,000 m above sea level. The entire route is painted with 108 chortens and colorful Buddhist flags fluttering against the snow-white crests of Himalayas. Some other spine-chilling trek routes are Druk Path, Snowman, Laya Gasa, Dagala Thousand Lakes, Nabji Korphu and Phobjikha Valley Birdwatching treks to enjoy the clusters of rare, black-necked cranes.
2. Paragliding
Comparatively a new adventure in Bhutan, paragliding is catching on fast enough. The best places for paragliding in Bhutan are Phobjikha, Bumthang, and Ura – the highest valley in the country. There are licensed agencies with certified pilots who take the gliders on a lifetime of experience over the lush green valleys and the high peaks of the snowy Himalayas.
3. Whitewater rafting and kayaking
Bhutan adventure is not complete without participating in water rafting and kayaking. The craters in Paro and Punakha valley are the perfect places for kayaking. Rivers like Paro Chhu, Upper Pho Chhu, Mangde Chhu and Mo Chuu flow with such force and vivacity that at times the rafting seems too difficult to manoeuvre. These adventure activities in Bhutan are certainly not for the weak-hearted. But the rivers are calmer in certain places, where the scenery around can be enjoyed to the heart’s content.
4. Cycling
The alpine roads of the country are great for Bhutan cycling. Slower than the rushing cars but much faster than walking, cycling allows the wanders to truly explore the beauty of the pine and firs, the lush green meadows and the hidden quarters of the Bhutan mountains. Cyclists must remember to wear the proper gear for safety reasons. As soon as the helmet is on the head and the right shoes are on feet, paddling down the road will open up new and unexplored worlds. Cycling routes range from smooth and paved roads of the countryside to the rocky and treacherous terrains of the hilly areas.
5. Rock Climbing
Rock Climbing is the ultimate end-game for adventure enthusiasts. Bungee jumping in Bhutan being a no-go because of the rules, this is as best as it gets when it comes to adventure. There are 13 exciting roots for all levels on the Nose, a climbing rock surface near Thimphu. The climbs are conducted by Vertical Bhutan Climbing Club.
6. Fishing in Bhutan
From large rivers to crystal-clear lakes, Bhutan has several spots for this recreational activity. The Khaling River in Eastern Bhutan is known for catfish and brown trout. Golden Mahseer fishing season in Bhutan is from March through May and September through November.
7. Hiking in Bhutan
For those looking for challenging activities, hiking in Bhutan offers splendid rewards. The mountainous region dotted with religious monuments is a hiker’s heaven. The six-day Druk Path Trek passes through pristine lakes, pine forests, and ancient religious sites. Jomolhari Laya Gasa Trek, Jomolhari Trek and Loop, and Nabji Korphu Trek are some of the popular routes for hiking in Bhutan.
