1. Bhagsu Falls

2. Bhagsu Nag Temple

This old temple has two pools that locals believe carry healing powers, and it is revered by the Gorkha and Hindu communities. A short, popular trek leads up to it. Bhagsu Falls and the Tibet Museum are a few minutes away.

3. Tibet Museum

The Tibet Museum records the story of Tibetan refugees who fled to India, their daily lives and their culture, along with parts of the Dalai Lama’s own memoirs. It is a quiet, moving stop and a good primer before you visit the monasteries.

4. Namgyal Monastery

Home to the 14th Dalai Lama and the largest Tibetan monastery outside Tibet, Namgyal sits about 3,000 m up in the Tsuglagkhang complex, with monks in meditation and daily prayer. It is the spiritual heart of any McLeodganj trip.

5. Masroor Rock Cut Temples

These 8th-century Hindu temples were carved and hollowed straight out of solid rock, and the stone etchings are an archaeological marvel. They sit a drive away toward the Kangra valley and reward the detour.

6. Dharamkot

Just 2 km above McLeodganj, Dharamkot is a calmer village with wide views of the Dhauladhar range and the Kangra valley. Travellers who want the cafes without the crowds base themselves here; small nature-walk treks start right from the road.

7. Dal Lake

A small, tree-ringed lake that locals visit for a relaxed day out, with light boating on offer. Swimming is not advised as the water stays muddy. It looks its best in the monsoon and early summer when the level rises.

8. Minkiani Pass
