The Zamorin kingdom of Calicut took over the area circa 1487 AD. At Kavalappara Kovilakam, the Zamorin appointed his chieftain. It was incorporated into the Kingdom of Mysore circa 1766 following the lengthy Zamorin of Calicut rule. Once the Treaty of Seringapatam was signed in 1792, it became part of the East India Company domain. Kozhikode became the British headquarters, which also established the Malabar District. Thalassery served as the headquarters of North Malabar, while Cherpulassery served as the headquarters of South Malabar. Ottapalam eventually became the new location of South Malabar headquarters. During the British Raj, Ottapalam was a part of Walluvanad Taluk of Malappuram Revenue Division in Malabar District, with its Taluk headquarters at Perinthalmanna.

The town was renamed Ottappalam, and the railway was installed. Around 1880, Ottappalam became the colloquial name for the city when the South Malabar Special Court began operations there. Over time, the name Ayirur-Thekkummuri was only found in land records. The present-day state of Kerala was dispersed throughout the British Indian districts of South Canara and Malabar and the two princely states of Travancore and Cochin before Indian independence. At its first All-Kerala conference in 1921, the Indian National Congress called for creating a separate state for the Malayalam-speaking areas of future Independent India. Ottapalam, the capital of South Malabar at the time, was located on the bank of the Bharathappuzha river. It was during that conference that the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee was formed. Before then, there were distinct Congress committees for the Travancore Cochin and Malabar Districts.
