Where Kerala group tours go

Eight stops cover almost every group itinerary in Kerala. The day counts are what works for a group, which moves slower than a couple.

1. Munnar (2 to 3 days)

Munnar is the hill leg of nearly every group tour, about 110 to 120 km and four hours by road from Kochi airport. Groups split their time between the KDHP Tea Museum (closed on Mondays), Eravikulam National Park for the Nilgiri tahr, and the Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point road. 2. Thekkady (1 to 2 days)

Three hours south of Munnar, Thekkady is where groups take the Periyar lake boat safari, a guided spice-plantation walk in Kumily and an evening Kalaripayattu show. Bamboo rafting inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve is a full-day guided trip that takes small batches, so a large group may need to split across two days.

3. Alleppey (1 to 2 days)

Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the houseboat town. Groups board around noon near the Punnamada jetty, cruise the canals and paddy fields, and moor for the night before dark. Big groups sail as a convoy of three or four boats, and lunch on board is usually rice, sambar and karimeen (pearl spot) fry. Read more on the Alleppey guide.

4. Kumarakom (1 to 2 days)

Kumarakom sits on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, about 35 km from Alleppey. The lake resorts here have lawns and halls big enough for a group dinner or an office session, and the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a short walk away. Go at dawn, when the herons and cormorants are feeding.

5. Kochi (1 day)

Kochi is the easy first or last day, since the airport is about 40 km from Fort Kochi. Walk the seafront past the Chinese fishing nets, then cross to Mattancherry Palace and Jew Town. The palace is closed on Fridays, and the Paradesi Synagogue closes on Fridays and Saturdays, which matters if your group lands at the end of the week.

6. Wayanad (2 to 3 days)

Wayanad is the northern hill district, about three hours from Kozhikode airport. Groups come for the Edakkal Caves, Banasura Sagar Dam and the Chembra Peak trek. 7. Varkala and Kovalam (1 to 2 days)

The beach end of the trip. Kovalam is 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram airport, and its Lighthouse Beach is the calm-water option for swimmers. Varkala is about 50 km north, with red cliffs and cafés that look straight over the Arabian Sea. 8. Offbeat stops

For groups that have done the classic loop, Vagamon has meadows and pine forest two hours from Thekkady, Athirappilly has Kerala's largest waterfall an hour from Kochi airport, and Ponmudi is a quiet hill station near Thiruvananthapuram. Gavi is the wildest of the four, but the forest department limits daily visitor entry, so book it well ahead.

Every group type below books the same core circuit. What changes is the pace, the room plan and the one or two stops that make the trip work for that crowd.

Friends and college groups

Triple and quad rooms keep the cost down, and most friends groups swap a sightseeing afternoon for a Munnar camp night or the Kolukkumalai sunrise jeep ride. End at Varkala if the group wants cliff cafés and a beach. Smaller friend groups of four or five will find better fits among our Kerala packages for friends.

School and educational groups

One coach, a teacher-to-student room plan, hotels that accept an early curfew and stops with something to learn: the Tea Museum in Munnar, a spice farm in Kumily, the Kathakali make-up session in Fort Kochi. Ask the agent for a daily headcount check at each transfer.

Corporate offsites and incentive trips

Kumarakom's lake resorts have conference halls and lawns for a team dinner, Thekkady's plantations host treasure hunts and team games, and a private houseboat dinner cruise closes the trip. The agent sends one consolidated invoice for the whole team.

Extended family groups

Senior-citizen groups

Keep driving to about four hours a day, skip the steep steps at Top Station, book lift-access hotels and add an Ayurveda massage day at Kovalam. The 8N/9D tour above is built for this pace, with three nights each in Munnar and Kovalam.

Women-only groups

Book the whole group into one hotel block, ask for the driver's name and number before arrival, and plan check-ins before dark. Varkala and Munnar are the routes women-only groups pick most often.

A Kerala group tour costs Rs 10,229 to about Rs 14,000 per person for 3 to 4 nights on 3-star, twin-sharing hotels, and about Rs 24,000 to Rs 25,100 per person for the 6N/7D and 8N/9D tours. The fare per head falls as your group grows, because the vehicle, driver and houseboat are shared by more people.

Four things move the final number:

• Season. Christmas and New Year weeks carry surcharges on houseboats and Munnar hotels, while June to September is the cheapest time to go.

• Houseboat category. Deluxe, premium and luxury air-conditioned boats can differ by more than half the price of a whole bedroom.

• Houseboats. Most boats in Alleppey and Kumarakom have one to four bedrooms, and a few larger ones have six to ten. Each bedroom sleeps two, with an extra bed for a child. Boarding is around noon, checkout around 9 am, and boats stop cruising before dark.

• Rooms. Hotels are booked as one block on the same floor where possible, with triple rooms (an extra bed) for friends and student groups.

• One point of contact. The agent assigns a coordinator who handles the vehicles, hotels and houseboats and answers the group's calls through the trip.

• Your dates, not ours. There are no fixed departures with strangers. Every group trip runs on the dates your group picks.

• Trains. Indian Railways e-tickets carry up to 6 passengers per booking, so a group of 20 needs four bookings made at the same time. Agents can add train legs to the quote.

Top group experiences in Kerala

These eight work best with a crowd. Each one needs a little planning when you are booking for 15 people rather than two.

Houseboat convoy on Vembanad Lake. Three or four boats sail together and moor side by side, so the group can eat together on one deck. Ask for boats of the same category, or someone ends up envious.

Periyar boat safari. The 7:30 am boat is the one to get, when elephants and gaur come down to drink. Tickets sell out in peak season, so book as soon as your dates are fixed.

Kathakali and Kalaripayattu evening. In Fort Kochi and Thekkady, get there early to watch the Kathakali make-up go on, then catch the martial-arts show that starts around 6 pm. A block of seats for a group is easy to arrange.

Spice plantation walk. A guided walk through cardamom, pepper and cinnamon in Kumily takes about an hour, and most groups leave with a bag of spices for home.

Fort Kochi and Mattancherry heritage walk. Start at the Chinese fishing nets at sunrise, then St Francis Church, Mattancherry Palace and Jew Town. Plan it for a weekday, since the palace and synagogue close on Fridays.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary at dawn. The trail along Vembanad's edge is flat and quiet at 6 am. Split a large group into two smaller walks.

Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Entry is for Hindus only, and the dress code is strict: men wear a mundu with no shirt, women wear a saree or a long skirt. Mundus can be hired at the gate.

Varkala cliff sunset. The cliff path has cafés facing west over the Arabian Sea. For a group dinner, book a table ahead from November to February.

Accommodation and meals on a group tour

Most Kerala group packages use 3-star hotels and resorts, booked as one block so the group stays together. Homestays suit smaller groups who want Kerala home cooking, and the houseboat night is part of almost every itinerary. Breakfast is included daily; lunch and dinner depend on the package and are listed on each card. On the houseboat, lunch, evening tea, dinner and breakfast are all included.
