The breeze brings freshness and serenity along with it. The panoramic sights here are a visual treat. Apart from its breathtaking beauty, Kerala hosts several cultural festivals which attract tourists in huge numbers. Our Kerala cultural tour packages cover all the things that need to be learned, discovered and enjoyed in Kerala.

Cultural Festivals Celebrated in Kerala

Onam: Every individual in India is familiar with this grand festival hosted in Kerala which portrays the triumph of Lord Vishnu over a demon. Boat races and parades are organized in the state with immense grandeur and glory. Traditional food is available in all the restaurants on this auspicious day and also the dance of Pulikkali is enjoyed during this time.

  • Attukal Pongal: Women wear a traditional white saree on the 9th day of the Attukal Pongal, in the Attukal temples and cook Pongal in pots made of clay. Antique jewelry is worn by women. The month of February hosts this festival in the state of Kerala.
  • Thrissur Pooram: Kerala cultural tour packages let you enjoy this spectacular festival which is celebrated in the month of April in Kerala. It lasts for a time span of 3 days wherein a procession takes place with over 50 elephants accompanied by music, dance, firecrackers and lots of enthusiasm.
  • Theyyam: Celebrated in Sri Muthappan Temple of Kannur, this festival lasts for a duration of six months starting from November till June. Theyyam is a traditional dance form which happens to be the prime highlight of this festival.
  • Puthari: Known as the ritual of prosperity, Puthari is celebrated in the month of August. Porridge is made with milk and rice. Dance performances and traditional music add to the beauty of this festival. Participants of these festivals are also gifted with grown crops.
  • Kalpathy Chariot Festival: This festival is celebrated in Kerala for ten days and has been a tradition since the past 700 years or more. Till the seventh day of this glorious festival, it is limited to the temple. However, the last three days involve several tourists from different places.

Favorable Time to Visit Kerala to Enjoy Cultural Festivals

The most favorable time to visit this surreal land of festivals is winter, December to February. The weather during this time is just perfect to enjoy your stay the right way, in comfort. The heat from the sun feels tempting on the skin. Some amount of rainfall can be expected in January end or February. Festivals like the Theyyam festivals and Machattu Mamangam are celebrated in the months of December and February respectively. However, if you wish to be present during the main festival of Kerala, i.e. Onam, you need to visit Kerala either in August or in September depending on the dates.

FAQs About Kerala Tour Packages

What to wear during the festival of Onam in Kerala?

Onam is the main festival celebrated in Kerala. Women are dressed in traditional outfits, mostly white sarees, given the borders are golden in color called Neriathu or Mundu, with gajras attached to their hair. Neriathu is a jacket worn over the blouse. On the other hand, Mundu is a normal saree. Men wear dhotis and their upper garments need to be in tandem with the color of their wife’s blouse.

Does the festival of Onam permit only vegetarian food?

No, Onam also permits non-vegetarian food. People residing in the southern part of Kerala prefer vegetarian food. On the other hand, the people residing in the northern part of the state prefer non-veg. Fish and chicken during Onam is a must for some people and there is a sudden increase in these food items across the country, during this time.

Are tourists welcome to attend the festivals?

Just the way in Bengal, Durga Puja can be enjoyed by everyone, including tourists, Onam too is open for all. Tourists should abide by the dress code and dress modestly as this is a traditional festival. Women can choose a white saree and men can wear a dhoti.

What should be the budget to buy special things from the markets of Kerala?

The budget you set is solely your prerogative. If you wish to shop more, your budget should be on the higher side. Cost of items in Kerala is not exorbitantly high.

Are donations to be made in the temples in Kerala?

There is no rule that you have to donate in temples. However, if you wish to do so, you can.

The resort in munnar was not at all good. The rooms and location was good but when it comes to good they serve you the left over food and don't prepare it fresh.
