Kerala Houseboat Packages: At A Glance
How a Kerala Houseboat Package Works
TravelTriangle's Kerala houseboat packages put you on a kettuvallam on the Alleppey (Alappuzha) and Kumarakom backwaters of Vembanad Lake, from a six-hour day cruise to two nights on the water. The cheapest trip on this page is a one-night Alleppey houseboat stay at Rs 7,387 per person, with all meals on board and Cochin airport or railway transfers included.
Overnight boats board around noon and cruise the Kuttanad paddy canals until about 5:30 pm. Then they anchor for the night. You step off by 9 am after breakfast. Couples usually take a 1 bedroom premium or luxury boat, a family of four fits a 2 bedroom, and a group of ten books a 5 bedroom boat. Budget travellers can take a cabin on a sharing houseboat.
Every package is quoted by verified local agents, so you can compare two or three offers, switch the boat category, or add a houseboat night to a Munnar and Thekkady itinerary. Planning more of the state? Browse all Kerala tour packages.

Kerala Houseboat Price per Night by Boat Type and Bedrooms
A Kerala houseboat is priced per boat, per night, not per person. The rate covers the bedrooms, the crew and all four meals for two adults per bedroom. Four things move the price. The first is the boat category. Then the number of bedrooms, the AC hours, and the date.
| Boat type | 1 bedroom | 2 bedrooms | 3 bedrooms | Day cruise (about 6 hr) | AC hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sharing (per cabin) | Rs 3,000 to 6,000 | Not applicable | Not applicable | Not offered | Night only |
| Deluxe | Rs 7,000 to 10,000 | Rs 11,000 to 15,000 | Rs 16,000 to 21,000 | Rs 4,000 to 6,000 | About 8 or 9 pm to 6 or 7 am |
| Premium | Rs 10,000 to 15,000 | Rs 15,000 to 20,000 | Rs 21,000 to 28,000 | Rs 6,000 to 9,000 | Night, full day on some boats |
| Luxury (glass-walled lounge) | Rs 15,000 to 25,000 | Rs 22,000 to 32,000 | Rs 30,000 to 40,000 | Rs 9,000 and up | Full time |
| Super luxury (jacuzzi, upper deck) | Rs 28,000 and up | Rs 35,000 and up | On quote | On quote | Full time |
| Group or conference boat (5 to 10+ bedrooms) | On quote | On quote | On quote | On quote | Varies by boat |
Rates rise by 20 to 40 percent between 20 December and 5 January, over Onam and on the Nehru Trophy weekend. Weekends run a little higher than weekdays through the October to February peak. From June to August the same boat often costs 25 to 30 percent less.
Deluxe houseboats are the value choice. You get clean bedrooms with attached baths, a small open deck, and AC that runs only at night. Most Alleppey families book these.
Premium houseboats add a larger lounge and deck, better interiors and, on many boats, longer AC hours. They suit families and small groups who will spend the afternoon on deck.
Luxury houseboats have glass-walled air-conditioned lounges, AC round the clock and a more polished kitchen. A super luxury houseboat with a jacuzzi or a private upper-deck bedroom is the anniversary booking. See all luxury Kerala tour packages if you want the rest of the trip at the same level.
Sharing houseboats sell single cabins on a larger boat. They are the cheapest houseboat in Alleppey, basic but clean, and good for solo travellers and backpackers who want the overnight experience for the price of a hostel bed and a meal.
Day Cruise, One Night or Two Nights?
Most first-timers book one night, and it is enough to see the Kuttanad canals, a sunset on Vembanad and a slow morning on deck. Two nights let the boat reach Kumarakom or cross towards Kollam without rushing. A day cruise works if you are short on time or not keen on sleeping on water.
| Option | Time on board | What you see | Price level | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shikara ride | 1 to 3 hours | Narrow village canals a houseboat cannot enter | Rs 400 to 1,000 per hour | You have one afternoon in Alleppey |
| Day cruise | About 11 am to 5 pm | Punnamada, Kuttanad canals, lunch on board | Rs 4,000 to 9,000 per boat | You want the scenery without the overnight |
| Overnight (1N) | About 22 hours, noon to 9 am | Canals, Vembanad sunset, village morning | Rs 7,000 to 25,000 per boat | It is your first houseboat |
| Two nights (2N) | About 46 hours | Alleppey to Kumarakom, or Alleppey towards Kollam | Roughly double the 1N rate | You want the slow version |
For shikara and canoe trips as a standalone plan, see our Kerala backwaters tour packages.
Why Choose a Houseboat Tour in Kerala?
Houseboats in Kerala are traditional wooden boats called kettuvallams. They are built in the old style, with jackfruit-wood hulls stitched with coir and a thatched roof of bamboo and palm, but now come with modern comforts. Inside you get AC bedrooms with attached baths, a kitchen with its own cook, and an open deck at the front.
The appeal is the pace. The boat moves at walking speed past coconut groves, paddy fields that sit below the waterline, toddy shops and church spires, and the crew handle the cooking and the route. Nobody needs to drive, and nothing needs planning. On a Kerala backwater houseboat you see village life from a few metres away. Women wash clothes on the ghats, ducks get herded down the canal and schoolchildren ride the ferry.
Where to Board: Alleppey vs Kumarakom vs Kollam
Your boarding point decides the route. Alleppey has the most boats and the busiest canals. Kumarakom is quieter and more resort-led. Kollam is the long-distance option for travellers who want fewer boats around them.
| Alleppey (Alappuzha) | Kumarakom | Kollam (Ashtamudi) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boarding jetty | Finishing Point, Punnamada | Kumarakom jetty and resort jetties | Kollam boat jetty on Ashtamudi Lake |
| Typical route | Punnamada, Kainakary, Kuttanad canals, Vembanad | Vembanad Lake, Pathiramanal island, bird sanctuary shore | Ashtamudi, then canals north towards Alleppey |
| Feel | Lively, most choice of boats | Calm, open lake, fewer boats | Quiet, long stretches of canal |
| From Cochin airport | About 85 km, 2 to 2.5 hr | About 80 km, 2 hr | About 150 km. Trivandrum airport is closer (about 70 km) |
| Nearest railway station | Alappuzha (about 3 km) | Kottayam (about 15 km) | Kollam Junction (about 2 km) |
| Best for | First-timers, families, sharing boats | Honeymoons, birdwatchers | Slow travellers, 2-night cruises |
Alleppey Round Trip
This is the classic loop and the one most packages use. Boats leave Finishing Point, cross Punnamada Lake where the Nehru Trophy is raced, and turn into the Kuttanad canals past Kainakary and Chennamkary, where rice grows on land reclaimed from the lake. Children wave from the banks and the boat stops for a toddy-shop fish curry or a chat with the village. Alleppey also has the widest spread of boats, from sharing cabins to glass-walled luxury. Browse the Alleppey houseboat packages for boats that board only here, or read the Alleppey houseboat trip guide before you go.
Alleppey to Kumarakom
Boats head north across the open water of Vembanad Lake, India's longest lake, and moor on the Kumarakom side for the night. It is the best route for birdwatchers. Cormorants, egrets and kingfishers gather along the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary shore, and Pathiramanal island sits in the middle of the lake. Couples like it because the lake is wider and the evening is quieter than in the Alleppey canals.
Kumarakom Backwater Loop
Kumarakom boats cruise a shorter loop around the eastern edge of Vembanad, past fishermen setting nets and small islands. The loop suits a relaxing day cruise or a single night, and many travellers pair it with a lakeside resort stay. More on the area in our Kumarakom backwaters guide.
Kollam to Alleppey
This is the longest Kerala backwater houseboat journey, about 85 km of lake and canal starting on Ashtamudi Lake and running north through narrow village waterways to Alleppey. It needs two nights on a houseboat, and it is the route for travellers who want long stretches without another boat in sight.
Poovar and Bekal
Two smaller houseboat areas are worth knowing. Poovar, near Thiruvananthapuram, has a handful of boats on the estuary where the Neyyar river meets the sea. Bekal, in north Kerala, runs houseboats on the Valiyaparamba backwaters. Both are quieter and priced on request, so ask your agent if you are already in the south or north of the state.
A Day on a Kerala Houseboat
An overnight houseboat runs to a fixed rhythm, because houseboats in Kerala are not allowed to cruise after dark. Here is how a typical Alleppey night goes.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 12 noon | Check in at Finishing Point. Tender coconut welcome drink, cabin handover, safety briefing |
| 1 pm | Lunch on board as the boat enters the Kuttanad canals: rice, fish curry, thoran, avial, pickle, papad |
| 3:30 pm | Tea and banana fritters on deck. Optional stop at a village or a toddy shop |
| 5:30 pm | Cruising ends and the boat anchors for the night near a village bank |
| Evening | Walk the village path, watch the sunset, then dinner around 8 pm |
| 8 or 9 pm | AC switches on in the bedrooms on deluxe boats (luxury boats run it all day) |
| 8 am | Breakfast of appam and stew or puttu, then a short cruise back |
| 9 am | Check out at the jetty |
Because boats board at noon and stop at 5:30 pm, avoid booking the houseboat on the day you land in Kerala unless your flight reaches Cochin by 9 am. Put it on day two or three of the trip instead.
What’s Included in Our Kerala Houseboat Tour Packages
At your Kerala boat house you will be greeted with a welcome drink of tender coconut water, followed by meals made from local ingredients by the cook on board. Vegetarian, Jain and seafood menus can all be arranged if you ask when you book, and many boats will buy fresh karimeen (pearl spot) or prawns from the fishermen you pass. An experienced crew, a captain, a cook and a helper, takes care of everything on the boat.
| Included | Not included |
|---|---|
| Private bedroom with attached bath (or a cabin on sharing boats) | Travel to the boarding point unless your package lists transfers |
| Lunch, evening tea and snacks, dinner, breakfast | Alcoholic drinks |
| Welcome drink, drinking water | Shikara or canoe rides, village walks with a paid guide |
| Captain, cook and helper | Tips for the crew |
| Cruise from noon to 5:30 pm and back next morning | Ayurvedic massage and other optional add-ons |
| AC in bedrooms (hours by boat type) | Extra-bed charges and peak-date surcharges |
| Life jackets and first-aid kit | Personal expenses |
Want the houseboat as one night of a longer trip? Most travellers add it to a hill-station stay on the Munnar Alleppey tour packages.
Private vs Sharing Houseboat: How to Choose the Right Boat
Start with group size, then budget. The bedroom count is the thing most travellers get wrong. Every bedroom sleeps two adults and one child below six, and an extra bed can be added to most rooms.
| You are | Book this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A couple | 1 bedroom premium or luxury private houseboat | Privacy, a deck to yourselves, full-time AC on luxury |
| A family of four | 2 bedroom deluxe or premium | One room each for parents and kids, space on deck |
| Three generations, 6 to 8 people | 3 or 4 bedroom premium | Everyone on one boat, one kitchen, one route |
| A group of 10 or more | 5 bedroom boat or a conference boat | Common lounge for meals, music and games |
| Solo or on a tight budget | A cabin on a sharing houseboat | The overnight experience at the lowest price |
For couples. A private houseboat with a flower-decorated bed and a candlelight dinner on deck is the most booked romantic option in Kerala. Kumarakom is quieter for this. Compare the Kerala houseboat honeymoon packages, or the wider Kerala honeymoon packages if the houseboat is one night of a longer trip.
For families. Boats have railed decks, life jackets in child sizes on request, and cooks who will make the food less spicy. Ask for a lower-deck bedroom if you are travelling with grandparents. See the Kerala houseboat family packages.
For groups. Multi-bedroom boats of five to ten rooms carry a common dining lounge and can be booked for birthdays or team offsites. Larger conference boats seat 30 or more for the day. Start with the Kerala group tour packages.
For solo travellers and backpackers. A sharing houseboat gives you your own cabin and shared meals with a few other travellers. It is the cheapest way to spend a night on the Alleppey backwaters.
When to Book a Kerala Houseboat: Season and Rates
October to February is the peak houseboat season. Days sit around 23 to 32 degrees and the water is calm. Book four to six weeks ahead for December. The monsoon (June to September) is the discount season. Heavy rain, green paddy and 25 to 30 percent lower rates make it good value if you do not mind a wet afternoon. March to May is hot and humid, so choose a boat with full-day AC.
| Months | Weather on the water | Houseboat rates | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| October to February | Dry, 23 to 32 degrees | Highest, peak 20 Dec to 5 Jan | Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead |
| March to May | Hot and humid, up to 35 degrees | Moderate | Pick full-time AC |
| June to September | Heavy rain, lush and green | Lowest, often 25 to 30 percent off | Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake in August (22 August in 2026) |
The Nehru Trophy weekend and Onam (August or September) sell out Alleppey boats weeks in advance. For month-by-month weather across the state, see the best time to visit Kerala guide.
Why Book With Us?
There are hundreds of boats on the Alleppey waterfront, and the photos online do not always match the boat that turns up. Here is what we do about it.
• Only the best agents. Travellers deal only with the top 10% reviewed agents, selected after a 23-step assessment by TravelTriangle.
• The boat is named before you pay. Your agent names the boat, its category and its bedroom count in the quote, so you know exactly what you are paying for. Ask for recent photos of that specific boat before you confirm.
• Registered, classified boats. Partner houseboats hold a Kerala Maritime Board licence and a Kerala Tourism classification, and every boat carries life jackets for all guests.
• Payment protection. TravelTriangle releases payment to the agent only after you receive your booking vouchers.
• Flexible packages. Change the boat category, add a night or add Munnar and Thekkady before you pay. Cancellation terms are shared in writing with every quote.
• 24/7 on-trip support. A local agent is on call for the whole trip, including the night you spend on the water.
Houseboat rates on this page are checked by our Kerala desk against current partner rate cards every season.
Plan Your Kerala Houseboat Trip
Pick a boat above, tell us your dates, group size and the boarding point you prefer, and verified Kerala agents will send you quotes to compare, usually within a few hours. If the houseboat is one night of a bigger holiday, start with our Kerala tour packages or the Kerala travel guide.

FAQs About Kerala Houseboat Tour Packages
How much does a Kerala houseboat cost per night?
A 1 bedroom deluxe houseboat costs about Rs 7,000 to 10,000 per night for two adults, with all meals. Premium boats run Rs 10,000 to 15,000 and luxury boats Rs 15,000 to 25,000. A super luxury houseboat with a jacuzzi starts near Rs 28,000. Each extra bedroom adds roughly Rs 5,000 to 8,000. Packages with transfers start at Rs 7,387 per person on TravelTriangle
Alleppey or Kumarakom: which is better for a houseboat stay?
Alleppey is better for a first houseboat trip. It has the most boats, the busiest canals and the Kuttanad village scenery most people picture. Kumarakom is better for honeymoons and birdwatching, with the open water of Vembanad Lake, fewer boats and quieter evenings. Both are about two hours from Cochin airport, and a 2-night cruise can cover both
Is one night on a houseboat enough, or should I book two?
One night is enough for most travellers. It covers an afternoon cruise through the canals, a sunset at anchor and a morning on deck. Book two nights if you want to reach Kumarakom from Alleppey, cruise towards Kollam, or simply do nothing for a full day. Families with young children usually find one night the right length
What is the check-in and check-out time on a Kerala houseboat?
Check-in is around 12 noon and check-out around 9 am the next day. The boat cruises from about noon to 5:30 pm, then anchors for the night, because houseboats in Kerala are not allowed to cruise after dark. It sets off again after breakfast for a short run back to the jetty. Day cruises usually run from about 11 am to 5 pm. Full timings are in our Alleppey houseboat timings guide
Is the houseboat air-conditioned?
Every bedroom has AC, but the hours depend on the boat. Deluxe boats usually run AC only at night, roughly 9 pm to 6 am. Many premium boats extend it, and luxury and super luxury boats run AC all day, often with an air-conditioned glass lounge. If you travel between March and May, or with elderly parents, ask for full-time AC when you book
Are meals included in the package?
Yes. An overnight Kerala houseboat package includes lunch, evening tea with snacks, dinner and breakfast, cooked fresh on board. Expect rice, fish curry, thoran, avial and appam with stew. Vegetarian, Jain and child-friendly menus are available if you ask in advance, and the cook can buy karimeen or prawns from local fishermen for a small extra charge
How to reach the boarding point?
Alleppey boats board at Finishing Point on Punnamada Lake, about 85 km (2 to 2.5 hours) from Cochin airport and 3 km from Alappuzha railway station. Kumarakom boats board at the Kumarakom jetty or resort jetties, about 15 km from Kottayam station. Most packages include a cab from the airport or station, and your agent shares the boat name and jetty the day before
Private vs sharing houseboat: what is the difference?
A private houseboat is yours alone, with your own crew, meals and route for the whole cruise. A sharing houseboat sells individual cabins on a larger boat, so you share the deck, meals and route with other travellers. Sharing costs roughly half as much per person and suits solo travellers and backpackers. Couples and families almost always prefer private
Which houseboat size do I need for a family of four or a group of ten?
A family of four needs a 2 bedroom houseboat. Each bedroom takes two adults, plus one child under six. Three generations of six to eight people fit a 3 or 4 bedroom boat. A group of ten needs a 5 bedroom boat, and larger groups can book a conference boat with a common lounge. Extra beds can be added to most rooms for a small charge
Is it safe for kids and the elderly?
Yes, the boats are safe. Decks have railings, every boat carries life jackets and a first-aid kit, and the crew stay on board through the night. Partner boats are licensed by the Kerala Maritime Board. Keep children off the roof deck while the boat is moving, and ask for a lower-deck bedroom for elderly travellers to avoid the stairs
Are houseboat rates higher at Christmas, New Year and Onam?
Yes. Rates rise by about 20 to 40 percent from 20 December to 5 January, and boats also cost more over Onam and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race weekend in August. Weekends through the October to February peak cost a little more than weekdays. For the best rates, travel on a weekday in the monsoon months of June to August
Can I customise my itinerary?
Yes. You can choose the boat category, the number of bedrooms and nights, the boarding point and the menu, and add Munnar, Thekkady or Kumarakom stays around the houseboat. The route on the water is set by the captain within the permitted cruising zones, and the boat must anchor by about 5:30 pm, so there is no night cruising
Do houseboats have Wi-Fi or a mobile signal?
Most boats have limited mobile signal, and it drops in the middle of Vembanad Lake. Wi-Fi may be available on some Kerala luxury houseboats, so plan on a few hours offline
