Wildlife Sanctuaries In Kerala

There are several wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala .

Wildlife in Kerala is abundant, with occasional glimpses of rare flora and fauna at any of the several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries of the state. It is the only state where one can find the highest number of Indian elephants. The evergreen forests of Kerala is the ideal breeding grounds for some of the most vicious as well as some of the most gentle animals and reptiles, such as panthers, foxes, king cobras, sloth bears,  crocodiles,  leopards,  fruit bats, sambars, lion tailed macaques and tigers. Even butterflies are in abundance here, especially if you visit the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, which houses more than 124 types of butterflies. Imagine a landscape awash in color, with the fluttering wings of hundreds of vibrantly colored butterflies.

The best national parks and sanctuaries to visit include the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Periyar National Park, Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, Salim Ali Bird Sacntuary, Eravikulam National Park, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve and Silent Valley. Safaris are the best way to spend time exploring the area around you.

Adventurous Wildlife Sanctuaries in Kerala

Kerala is not just famous for its beaches and cruises, there is one more thing that tourists love about this place, and that is the wildlife. It is home to some of the best wildlife sanctuaries in the country.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary – Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Western Ghat Hills, and is known to be one of the most thrilling wildlife destinations in the state and country. This sanctuary has more than 1800 species of plants, 171, species of grass, around 35 mammal species, and approximately 265 bird species. No wonder why this sanctuary is one of the most amazing sanctuaries in Kerala. It is not incorrect to say that this is a place which is close to the heart of many tourists.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary – It has been considered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and is situated in Kerala’s Palakkad district. The rich flora and fauna entices tourists, and also the fact that four local tribes constructed their colonies in this sanctuary. Tourists can find 39 mammal species, 16 amphibian species, 268 types of birds, and 124 varieties of butterflies.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary – This sanctuary is located between Periyar and Cheruthoni, and is covered with lush green forests. Tourists visiting this place can enjoy boat rides and explore the beautiful view of the nature and wildlife like Wild Dogs, Tigers, Sambhars, to name a few.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary – Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is also considered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is located on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border in Idukki District. Its sharp scrub jungle makes it different and unique from the other sanctuaries. Apart from the scrub jungle, tourists are also attracted by the popular sandalwood forests, nature walks, waterfalls, camping and trekking within the sanctuary. Tourists can also climb up to the watchtowers, and take a glimpse of the wild animal species.
