UNESCO declared the Basilica of Bom Jesus as a World Heritage Site. You can visit this church when you go to Old Goa which was once the capital of Portuguese India. The literal translation of Bom Jesus in the Portuguese language is Good Jesus. The church began to be built in the year 1594 and was completed 11 years later. The church holds a lot of significance for the Christians. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is one of the oldest churches in Goa and even India.

One of the very famous Roman Catholic missionaries was St. Francis Xavier, who was also one of the founders of the Society of Jesus. He worked his entire life towards spreading Christianity. He died while he was on a trip to take his missionary work forward and his body then was kept in the casket in the Basilica of Bom Jesus. He was also believed to have powers of healing. After the passing away of St. Francis Xavier, the church became known worldwide. Tourists from far away places come to visit and pay their respects to St. Francis Xavier.
