People, in general, think that God Bhairav protects the Kedarnath Temple. When the winter season comes, since there is no way people can access the Kedarnath shrine area due to its closure, it’s usually held that Lord Bhairav, referred to as Kshetrapal, stands atop guarding this holy site and the entire area of Kedar. It is much more than just a place for prayers and offerings, as you will be astounded by the breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.

Adi Shankara was an 8th-century philosopher and saint. He is known as the founder of Advaita, meaning everything in this universe is interconnected. When Adi Shankara reached the end of his earthly sojourn, he travelled to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand- his final stop during his world trip. After travelling everywhere, he chose this place to embrace death and achieve Nirvana, which implies perfect peace and freedom. A special place called Shankaracharya Samadhi has been constructed in memory of this great saint, where he attained Nirvana. This shrine has a unique lingam made from a crystal called a spike.

4. Gaurikund

According to a legend, the Gaurithe goddess performed nonstop penance or Tapa meditation here for several years until Lord Shiva finally accepted her wish to marry her. According to another legend, once upon a time, Lord Shiva got so angry that he cut off the head of his son Ganesha, who had been guarding Parvati while she was in her bathroom. Later, to resurrect Ganesha, Shiva replaced it with that of an elephant. For this reason, Ganesha is often depicted with an elephant’s head. A hot spring is nearby, and it is believed that bathing in this pool cleanses your sins and purifies you.

5. Triyuginarayan Temple

Lord Shiva admitted his love for Parvati, and they got married after Goddess Parvati completed her long penance in the Himalayas. The place where their celestial wedding took place is called Triyuginarayan Temple. The exact spot where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married is marked by a stone called Brahma Shila, which stands right in front of the temple. In front of the temple, there is also a fire, which, according to legend, has been burning since their marriage day. The unbroken flame gave the temple another name, i.e., Akhand Dhuni Temple or Eternal Flame Temple.
