The Mizoram State Museum in Aizawl was first established in April 1977. The place had initially begun its journey from a rented house, and in July 1990, it finally was opened as a standalone building. Indian Museum, Kolkata, also played a crucial role in developing the various galleries the Museum houses. The reorganisation and redevelopment of the galleries was finally complete by 2008.

Today, the museum is only 200 metres away from the main road, which is laid down the path to Aizawl. It has a spectacular build and showcases five prominent galleries with modern and unique looks. The Museum Curator heads the museum, while other staff members, such as the Technical Assistant and Taxidermist, assist in Museum affairs.

The Mizoram State Museum is a famous tourist attraction in Aizawl; hence, it is crowded every day. The museum charges a nominal fee of Rs. 20 per adult and Rs. 10 per child. In addition, people must note the place’s timings, which vary according to seasons.

In summer, the regular visiting hours remain between 1 pm and 4 pm on Mondays, 10 am and 4 pm on Tuesdays to Fridays, and 10 am and 2 pm on Saturdays. Meanwhile, in winter, people can visit between 1 pm and 3:30 pm on Mondays; from Tuesday to Friday, they can see between 10 am and 3:30 pm, and on winter Saturdays, the door remains open from 10 am to 2 pm. Additionally, the State Museum remains closed on Sundays and other government holidays observed in the region and across India.
