Sir Stamford Raffles landed at this site on 28 January 1819 and stayed here for 10 days. During his stay, he concluded the first treaty with the local rulers of this region. Situated on the on Singapore River’s northern bank, this site is marked by a statue of Sir Stamford Raffles’. The original statue that was made the original statue was made in 1887 and is currently placed opposite Victoria Concert Halls. The statue that now stands at the site was unveiled in 1972 and is made with poly-marble using the plaster casts of the original statue. The inscription on the statute states, “On this historic site, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles first landed in Singapore on 28th January 1819, and with genius and perception changed the destiny of Singapore from an obscure fishing village to a great seaport and modern metropolis.”

In 2019, as a part of the 200th-anniversary celebration of Founding of modern Singapore, various alterations were made to the statue and around its area. One of the most interesting creative work on Sir Stamford Raffles statue was camouflaging the statue with the buildings in the backdrop in Raffles Place to create an illusion of the statue ‘disappearing’. Another alteration around the statue was done by installing the statues of Raffles’ contemporaries including Munshi Abdullah, Tan Tock Seng, and Naraina Pillai along with the statue of Sang Nila Utama, the founder of the Kingdom of Singapura.
