1. Coleman Bridge
Located near Clarke Quay, Coleman Bridge is a vehicular bridge that spans the Singapore River. It connects Hill Street and New Bridge Road. The Coleman Bridge was the 2nd bridge built across the Singapore River after Elgin Bridge and the 1st one to be built in masonry. It is also known as ‘Yi Ma Lo Khiu’ in Cantonese which means ‘the bridge at the second road’. Located in the Central Area of Singapore, a part of the bridge defines the boundary between the Downtown Core and the Singapore River Planning Area.
In 1840, a brick bridge was constructed over the Singapore River, joining the Old Bridge Road and Hill Street. It was designed by George Drumgoole Coleman (1795–1844), an Irish architect and the first architect of Singapore. There this bridge was named after him and came to be known as Coleman Bridge. The bridge had 9 arches and was often referred to as the New Bridge. The nearby road also acquired its name from this bridge and came to be known as the New Bridge Road. In 1865, the brick bridge was replaced by a timber bridge, but it was not constructed properly.
This bridge was built by the government and cost about Straits $10,000. Later in 1886, an iron bridge replaced the wooden bridge and came to be one of the most attractive bridges in the country spanning the Singapore River. But the bridge could not stand the rapidly growing traffic movement between New Bridge Road and Hill Street. So, in 1986, the iron bridge was brought down and replaced by the present concrete bridge. But to pay tribute to the historical structure, several elements of the iron bridge were incorporated in the new version of Coleman Bridge, including the iron railings and decorative lamp posts.
2. Elgin Bridge

The bridge has been named after Lord Elgin who was the Governor-General of India between 21 March 1862 and 20 November 1863. The first ever version of this bridge was in the form of a wooden footbridge that was built in 1822 under the guidance of Lieutenant Philip Jackson. The latest bridge was constructed on 30 May 1929, replacing an iron bridge and was inaugurated by the Governor of the Straits Settlements Sir Hugh Clifford.
