The NTR Gardens, located near Hussain Sagar Lake, is a recreational park. In 1999, 5 acres (2.0 ha) of a 55-acre plot were used to create a memorial for N. T. Rama Rao. This memorial, inaugurated by N. Chandrababu Naidu, was part of the Buddha Purnima Project, which aimed to beautify and develop the Hussain Sagar Lake area into a significant tourist attraction managed by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA). Plans were made to expand this area, now known as NTR Gardens, by building a museum dedicated to N. T. Rama Rao.
In 2000, the Government of Andhra Pradesh announced further development projects in the area, including NTR Gardens, a rock garden, and an IMAX theatre. Work on the gardens began in January 2000. Still, soon after, two non-profit organizations petitioned for an immediate halt to the construction. They argued that regulations designated the area around the lake as a recreation zone, which should be free from commercial or residential construction. By 2001, despite its challenges and controversies, extensive work on 34 acres of the gardens was completed at a cost of ₹40 crores. The gardens, now a popular attraction for both locals and tourists, feature a variety of plants, a souvenir complex, a visitors’ train, restaurants, and a waterfall.
