About Hougang

Hougang

Located in the Northeast area of Singapore, Hougang is a larges planning area and residential town. 222,310 residents, the town is the second most populated town in the region. Hougang planning area is borders Sengkang towards the north, Geylang and Serangoon towards the south, Bedok towards the southeast, Toa Payoh towards the southwest, Paya Lebar towards the east and Bishan and Ang Mo Kio towards the west. Hougang is divided into 8 subzones which include Hougang Meadow, Hougang Central, Hougang South, Kovan, Serangoon North, and Buangkok View. Hougang also homes to the last kampong in Singapore, Kampong Lorong Buangkok. It is preserved to keep the cultural heritage intact.

Hougang is situated upstream, at the back of Sungei Serangoon and this is where it gets its name from. The term Hougang means the ‘river end’. Earlier, the name implied to the area between the junction of the 5th milestone at Upper Serangoon Road and Upper Paya Lebar Road/Boundary Road to the junction of the 7th milestone at Upper Serangoon Road and Punggol Road. The area that lies beyond the 7th milestone along Punggol Road used to come under the Punggol region of Singapore. But now this area is also counted within the Hougang Town. That particular part of Punggol Road has now been named as Hougang Avenue 8, with Punggol Road starting further towards North.

Punggol was popular for Pig farming and this occupation was carried out even in regions that are now part of Hougang Town. In the late 1990s, the last generation of these pig farmers were relocated to flats built in Hougang. Hougang has now developed under the Housing and Development Board (HBD) into a new town with over 40,000 housing units divided into pockets of private residential areas. The used to be a fishing port also beyond the 7th milestone at the end of Upper Serangoon Road.

One of the striking features of Hougang is well located at Hougang Street 21. The well is still identified as the Tua Jia Kha well structure. ‘Tua Jia Kha’ means the ‘foot of a big well’. The village used to be a popular hotspot for food, street wayangs, itinerant Chinese medicine men and storytellers spinning yarns. With the construction of Tampines Way in 1977, the development of Hougang saw an increase in the pace. Completed in 1994, Neighbourhood 8 is the city center and Neighbourhood 9 built in the year 2000, is the youngest in the addition.
