About Bishan

Bishan is also known as Bishan New Town and Bishan Town. Bishan shares borders with Central Water Catchment in the west, and the planning areas of Ang Mo Kio on the north, Toa Payoh on the south and Serangoon on the east. In the past Bishan belonged to Kwong Wai Siew Peck San Theng, which was a cemetery that mainly served the Hakka and Cantonese communities of Singapore. In 1870, after the establishment of cemeteries, human settlements started sprouting in this area which led to the formation of Kampong San Teng.

But in 1942, during the Battle of Singapore, Peck San Theng witnessed an intense firefight between the Japanese and the British forces. When this region, at last, fell in the hands of the Japanese forces, it became a refuge for the Singaporean community. In 1973, this region stopped accepting burials and 6 years later the land was given out for development by the government. The land clearing processes were carried out between 1982 and 1984 during which the graves were exhumed.
