At present, the Saramsa Garden is a popular tourist destination in Gangtok. The Garden was constructed in 1922 to cultivate and provide fresh fruits for British executives looking after the Namgyal Royal Family of Sikkim.

They cultivated a variety of fruits, including oranges, pineapples, guava, litchi, bananas, and many more. Later, in 1940, the forest officials decided to grow a medicinal plant called “Cephailis Ipecacuanha”, and the Saramsa Garden was also known as “Ipecac” after the medicinal plant was introduced. The forest officials delivered a casket of fruits known as “Dati” to the palace and the British Residency weekly.
