History and Significance of Naggar Castle
Kullu is one of the ancient states which is believed to have been founded by Behangamani Pal, a resident of Tripura. Besides being a royal residence, it served as the administrative headquarters of Himachal Pradesh for a long period of time. It is believed that while constructing the castle, the king had gathered stones from an abandoned site called Gardhak, a place in the village of Baragaon. It is believed that the stones were transferred along the Beas River.
This site is of particular importance also because it highlights the beauty of Himalayan architecture and tells us more about its traditions. This castle was made up of stone and wood which is visible in the beautifully crafted rooms, doors and roofs. The interior designs are also minutely done with a touch of European style along with the Himalayan style called the Katkuni style. The walls are built by using strong materials which have preserved it till date. It has two courtyards among which one is the Jagatipatt temple which also has fine detailing like that of Naggar castle. This place also has a museum in the basement which showcases the rich Himalayan culture like clothes, carpets etc.
