The story behind the Bedi Hanuman Temple is captivating. It is believed that Lord Jagannath had given the task of protecting Puri from the Sea God Varuna to Lord Hanuman. Lord Hanuman obliged, and he did his duty diligently. However, one day, Lord Hanuman left for Ayodhya without informing Lord Jagannath, and this was when sea water entered Puri, causing massive destruction to the property and distress to the people. When people prayed to Lord Jagannath, he decided to investigate the matter and wondered how it happened, as Lord Hanuman was supposed to be watching over Puri.
Lord Jagannath became furious and demanded an explanation from Lord Hanuman, who explained his absence when tragedy struck. Lord Jagannath then decided to teach Lord Hanuman a lesson to avoid such a mishap from ever occurring again. He decided to tie the hands and feet of Lord Hanuman so that he would always be present at the seashore, protecting Puri and its people. This is why, to this day, the Lord Hanuman idol is shackled, and this is how the temple got the name of Bedi Hanuman Temple.
