The Ba Thien Hau Temple was built in memory of Thien Hau Thanh Mau, a brilliant person who experienced spiritual rebirth through the historical facts found in books. She was also famous for her future predictions, spiritual observations, and support of the local communities during their times of need. One day, she realised that her father’s and her brother’s lives were at risk at the sea. While she was sitting with her mother to help her in weaving, her energy compelled her to help her family. Unfortunately, she could save only her brothers and her father was taken ashore by the agile waves. Her unusual bravery earned a lot of popularity and a reputation amongst the fishermen who always considered her an escape from all difficulties during their voyage.

In the 17th century, the Thien Hau Temple was established for the followers of Thien Hau Thanh Mau to worship her. The temple played a pivotal role in the culture of the Vietnamese people in Saigon, later named Ho Chi Minh City. The cultural importance of this temple can be traced to the artefacts, historic remnants, and crafted idols that are to date preserved in this sanctum.

Ba Thien Hau Architecture

The Temple represents the “seal” style, a form of Chinese architecture. This amalgamation of four connected houses creates a ground representing the term “mouth” or “nation” in the Chinese language. In the middle are three lines of houses in the centre: the front hall, mid-hall and back hall. Amidst these lines of houses, there’s a small area named the “Thien Tinh”, which means sky well. It is significant for the temple structure as it allows it to be spacious and breezy. It also allows sufficient light for the back hall, which helps ease the escape of incense smoke.

All three halls remain heavily adorned with various designs related to the flora and fauna found in this region. They also feature sentences written in yellow and red, as these colours signify trust and security. Additionally, the temple has another consecutive painting of four in a row, which presents the creatures of “four energies.” Round carvings and heavily built ceramic statutes are also used to decorate the porch, ceiling, walls, and the main altar.
