These mythical creatures called Naga were half serpent and half human. A Mahayana Buddhist came in and cut through the hill in the valley of Kathmandu to make land available for human use. Although the water was not drained, it caused rage among the Nagas. The king of Nagas, Karkotak, decided to take revenge on the humans.
Rato Macchindranath asked the people around the Lake to build a magnificent underwater palace to reduce his anger. They adorned the palace with precious gems and successfully reduced his rage. The King of Naga was happy with it but maintained that no one should interfere with the lake’s biodiversity for a peaceful setup. This is why fishing and swimming are not allowed in the Taudaha Lake.
