The government officially designated it a forest reserve in 1932. This massive forest spans an area of almost 2,500 hectares. Three of Nairobi’s most famous forests are Ngong Forest, Oloolua Forest, and Karura Forest.
The Karura Forest is the biggest of these three forests. In the 1950s, when Kenya was fighting for independence, the Mau Mau freedom fighters used this forest to hide. There have been many attempts to reduce the area of Karura Forest and make it a lot more ‘developed,’ but activists have fought to conserve the forest and have been pretty successful.
