Bada Bagh Jaisalmer, also called Barabagh is a garden complex located about six kilometres north of Jaisalmer in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The site is usually open to visitors from 8 AM to 6 PM daily. The history of Bada Bagh dates back to the 16th century when the first chhatri was constructed during the reign of Maharaja Jai Singh II. He, in fact, did the noble deed, among many other deeds, of commissioning a dam, Jait Bandh, to create a water tank. Bada Bagh holds historical importance as it reflects the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan. The chhatris represent the royal lineage of Jaisalmer and serve as a tribute to the region’s rulers.

Bada Bagh, meaning “Big Garden,” was commissioned by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the early 16th century. Bada Bagh Jaisalmer is situated on a small hill. The memorial chhatri cenotaphs have all been carved out of sandstone blocks but have been built in at least four different sizes – for the ruling kings, queens, princes, and other royal family members. The architecture of these chhatris is a blend of Paliwal, Mughal, and Rajput styles of architecture. Each cenotaph contains inscribed tablets with names of the King and Queen. Some of the cenotaphs have a statue of the King on a horse and his queen standing nearby. The size of the chhatri varies according to the person’s status.
This garden also includes a tank, dam, and Govardhan Stambh (pillar). The pillar was constructed to commemorate the nearby tank and dam construction. Locals refer to the dam as Jait Bandh, while the tank is Jait Sar. The Jait Bandh is a huge structure measuring over 1,200 feet in length and 350 feet in width. Both the tank and dam have been constructed using solid blocks of stone.

2. Thar Desert Museum

Jaisalmer’s Thar Desert Museum displays the region’s unique heritage through folk art and artefacts. The Thar Heritage Museum is housed in a beautiful traditional Haveli-style building, a characteristic architectural style of Rajasthan.
