The red roof housed on the island of Mouchoir Rouge (literally, red handkerchief) is quite famous in Mauritius. Mysteriously so. Most of the buildings on this island date back to 1800s. At that time, it was easy to walk from the beach to the island during low tide, with shallow water eliminating the need of a boat. Then, it was called Coin-du-Mouchoir. There used to be glorious bungalows of wealthy British, most of which were destroyed by the 1982 cyclone. However, nobody knows why this red house was built – not even those living in the area.
