There is an important festival celebrated in Kandy in August, and is known by the name Kandy Festival.
The Kandy Festival, officially known as Kandy Esala Perahera, is an age-old Buddhist festival that honours the premier teaching of Lord Buddha. The festival is often referred to as the Festival of the Tooth where ‘Perahera’ means ‘religious procession’ and Esala denotes a month in the calendar of the Sinhalese. Celebrated annually during the Sinhalese month of Esala, i.e. between July and August, Kandy Festival begins on a full moon and continues for the next ten days. In August 2022, the Kandy Esala Perahera is expected to be celebrated from the 5th – 14th August.
