Tibet and India are connected by the 5800-meter-high Niti Pass, which once was a trade route. The people who live in the mountains around Niti still use their traditional subsistence ways. Niti Valley is one of the last bastions of the distinctive trans-Himalayan culture and customs, which the Bhotia community still fervently practices. Among the distinctive traditions still practised by the Bhotia community are the Lapsu, Mask Dance, Sitoon, and celebrating Sangrand, the first day of the month on the lunar calendar. Going beyond Malari now requires special permission from the administration.
