Known as the “Mother Temple” in Bali, Pura Besakih is situated roughly 3,000 feet up the slopes of Mount Agung in East Bali. Pura Besakih is considered as the most important Hindu temple in Bali and is actually a complex of 23 separate temples that can be explored by tourists. Pura Besakih made the world spotlight in 1963 when the temple – thought to have been saved by the gods – miraculously survived a devastating eruption by Mount Agung. Pura Besakih is a complex made up of twenty-three temples that sit on parallel ridges. All this is aligned along a single axis and designed to lead the spiritual person upward and closer to the mountain which is considered sacred. The main sanctuary of the complex is the Pura Penataran Agung. The symbolic center of the main sanctuary is the lotus throne, or padmasana, which is, therefore, the ritual focus of the entire complex. It dates to around the seventeenth century.
