The Sri Peddamma Thalli Temple, also known as Peddamma Gudi or Peddamma Temple, is a Hindu temple in Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad. It’s a popular spot for worshipping the Mother Goddess. The temple’s history goes back over a century. Established in 1908, it housed a small idol of the deity in a humble hut. Over time, the temple grew in favour and stature, reaching its present form in 1993 with the construction of the Rajagopuram, an ornate gateway tower. The temple is dedicated to Peddamma, a manifestation of the Goddess Laxmi depicted seated on a lion. Peddamma translates to “Mother of Mothers,” signifying the Goddess as the supreme mother.
The temple complex includes a central temple with a few smaller ones surrounding it. Interestingly, devotees can offer only coconuts to the Goddess, and vendors selling coconuts are conveniently located within the temple premises.

Legend Behind The Temple

Several legends surround the Goddess and the origin of her sacred abode. According to one tale, after defeating the Asura, the Goddess arrived at this place and quenched her thirst from the nearby well. It is said that a shepherd later discovered her idol here, leading to the construction of this temple on the same spot. Another famous story links this Goddess to the fierce Asura Mahishasura and his notorious legend. Mahishasura, bearing the head of a water buffalo, was a formidable demon who gained immense power through severe penance, acquiring boons that made him invulnerable to harm from gods or men. Believing himself invincible, he unleashed terror upon both celestial and mortal realms.
Considering women as weak and thus excluding them from his boons, Mahishasura overlooked them as a potential threat. Seizing this opportunity, the Gods united and invoked Goddess Durga, imbued with the collective powers of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Riding a roaring lion and armed with formidable weapons, she led the celestial armies against Mahishasura and his forces. In the fierce battle, Goddess Durga emerged victorious, slaying Mahishasura and ending his reign of terror. Revered as Peddamma, the divine Mother who showed compassion to her suffering children and became their saviour, she is worshipped here. True to the legend, she is depicted as ‘Simha Vahini,’ seated proudly on a lion.
Significance Of The Peddamma Temple

Numerous temples in Telangana are dedicated to Maa Durga, who embodies Shakti. One such revered form is known as Pedamma Thalli. The term “Peddamma” originates from Telugu, combining “Pedda” and “Amma,” signifying “the mother of mothers” or the Supreme Mother. Thalli denotes Mother; hence,” Peddamma Thalli” carries the same meaning, portraying the Goddess as the ultimate maternal figure. Peddamma Thalli is also referred to as Sri Gauramma and Sri Ammavaru. Locally, she is believed to embody one of the eleven forms of Mahakali, worshipped as the universal Mother in this temple.
A unique tradition here involves devotees offering only coconuts to the Goddess. Another peculiar custom is to place coins vertically in a designated spot and make wishes, believing it will bring them the blessings needed to fulfil genuine desires. Throughout the year, devotees offer prayers and perform sacrifices to the presiding deity. Special poojas and rituals, adhering to Vedic traditions, are conducted to honour the Mother Goddess, who bestows abundant blessings upon her worshippers.

Architecture Of The Temple

The Peddamma Temple exemplifies South Indian temple architecture. It features a grand gopuram, 40 feet high at its entrance, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures of numerous gods and goddesses. Crowning the gopuram is a golden kalash with a flag bearing the Goddess’s symbol. Beyond the gopuram lies the mandapam, a spacious hall with pillars and arches that often hosts cultural events on its stage. From the mandapam, one enters the Prakaram, encircling the Garbhagriha, the sanctum sanctorum housing the main idol of the Goddess. This sacred space, accessible only to priests, centres around a 10-foot-tall idol crafted from panchaloha, a five-metal alloy. The idol, adorned with exquisite attire, jewellery, and flowers, exudes a compassionate aura. Its four hands hold symbols representing the Goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati, Durga, and Kali. Seated on a lotus, symbolising purity and prosperity, the idol faces east, its halo signifying enlightenment and grace.
In addition to the main shrine, the temple grounds include shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord Hanuman, Lord Subramanya, Lord Ayyappa, and Goddess Saraswati. Each deity has its rituals, and devotees pay respects with deep reverence. The temple also houses a Navagraha shrine for astrological well-being and a revered banyan tree under which a small shrine of Lord Shiva resides, considered sacred and auspicious by visitors and devotees alike.
