Out of the 7 subzones that Choa Chu Kang Way New Town consists, 4 are densely populated. Choa Chu Kang Central, Choa Chu Kang North, Teck Whye, and Yew Tee are the highly populated subzones.
Choa Chu Kang Way gets its name from historical Chua Chu Kang Village which is situated near the junction of Choa Chu Kang Road and Jalan Sungei Poyan. This place now has been occupied by the National Shooting Centre which is a body under the Singapore Shooting Association. The name of this place has a deeper history. The term ‘Choa Chu Kang’ has been derived from the word ‘kang chu’ of Teochew dialect. ‘Kang’ means the ‘riverbank’ and ‘chu’ means ‘master’ or ‘owner’. In the 19th century, Many people from China migrated to cultivate gambier and pepper at the river banks of Choa Chu Kang. Among them, many migrated to Johor in the north going by the suggestion of Temenggong of Johor. ‘Kangchu’ was the name given to these plantation owners.
