Historically, this area was once a rural district with farms. Even though it has been recently established but it is technically one of the settlements of Singapore that was once resided majorly by the malays.

    The town is famous for the WW2 scenario when around 400 Chinese civilians were believed to have been massacred by the military forces of Japan at Punggol point. After the war, during the 1960s, the town went through a developmental phase and facilities like electricity, well-maintained roads, drainage system, and piped water were made available to the residents. It was during this time only when televisions began to get installed in many residences.
