Neermahal, or “Water Palace”, is a spectacular architectural structure on Rudrasagar Lake in Tripura. Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma built this lovely palace in the 1930s as his summer residence and a pleasure house. Thus, an excellent palatial building emerged from a grand vision that merged Hindu Mahal and Mughal styles, representing his diverse taste and the grandeur of his rule.
Standing on Rudrasagar Lake, it is located in such a place as to add charm to its appearance. By boat, beautiful buildings placed in tranquil surroundings can be accessible to visitors. The royal families are wealthy and skilful, evidenced by large courtyards, intricate carvings, and enormous green gardens. According to Rabindranath Tagore, a famous Nobel laureate, it is named “Neer Mahal.” Because the entire quiet location of the palace is surrounded by water, it is also called, in the local language, Kokborok, “Twijilikma Nuyung”. Neermahal is a significant historical site with its rich history, beauty, and royal glamour that attracts visitors.

History of Neermahal

The Neermahal epitomises evidence of history and speaks of Tripura’s royal lineage. The construction dates back to 1930-1938. Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma envisioned it as his retreat to retreat from the oppressive summer heat. Perched on Rudrasagar Lake, it combines engineering feats and architectural expressions with traditional Hindu and Mughal architectural expressions. In 1921, the Maharaja commissioned the British firm Martin and Burns to build an unusual water palace in Lake Rudrasagar. Detailed instructions given by the Maharaja himself were followed while designing and constructing the Lake Palace. Even today, the profusion of balconies, towers, pavilions, and bridges stands out. The far-visible dome-shaped minars also give the Neer Mahal a fort-like appearance. This palace is said to have taken nine years to build.
Much planning had gone into the construction to ensure that the palace blended without a jarring note into the lake, with an intricate water management system in place to prevent the possibility of flooding. The palace was not only for summer residence but also a site of leisure/ceremonial events. This is where royal gatherings and cultural performances that represented the Maharajas’ interest in the arts and entertainment used to take place. Neermahal, with its elaborately designed interiors and vast gardens, was equally brilliant in its conception of seclusion and comfort. Nevertheless, it continues to serve as a poignant reminder of the Maharaja’s rich cultural legacy and bequest to Tripura.
