Pather Masjid Srinagar, also known as Pathar Mosque, is a historical monument of Mughal architecture which is not very popular but is an architectural beauty situated in Srinagar, Kashmir. Built by the famous Mughal Empress Noor Jehan in 1623, this mosque in Srinagar is famous for being built with grey limestone available in the region. While the wooden mosques typical for the region were replaced by the Mughals with stone structures, Pather Masjid Srinagar is a fine example of the Mughal’s architectural creativity and the fusion of Persian and Kashmiri elements. However, the mosque still stands tall and is a testimony to the historical background of Srinagar city.
History Of Pather Masjid Srinagar

The history of Pather Masjid Srinagar is as interesting as the structure of the building. Constructed by the Mughal historian Malik Hyder Chaudhary, the mosque was meant for the Shi’a Muslims of Srinagar. However, soon after its construction, an unbecoming remark by Empress Noor Jehan caused the place to be vandalised and made unclean for use in prayers. The mosque remained in ruins for centuries and it became a symbol of the passage of time in the valley of Kashmir. It was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that attempts were made to restore it for its historical value, although it never returned to its religious use.
