History Of Parimahal Kashmir

Parimahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s elder son, Prince Dara Shikoh in the year 1650 A.D. It is said that Dara Shikoh built Parimahal for his wife ‘Begum Pari’, hence the palace got its name. Prince Dara Shikoh initially used Parimahal as his residence and a library. Later, it was converted into an observatory by Mulla Shah, Dara Shikoh’s teacher, to provide lessons on astrology and astronomy. It is also believed that Parimahal was the exact location where Prince Dara Shikoh was killed by his younger brother, Aurangzeb, to gain power in the Mughal kingdom.

The architecture at Parimahal is mesmerising. It is a seven-terraced octagonal structure made with marble and sandstone. The centre of the palace is adorned with a majestic marble fountain which is beyond fascinating. The main entrance gateway is beautifully arched with a dome-shaped structure in the middle of the garden. The water channels, arched gateways and terrace gardens make Parimahal in Kashmir a gorgeous example of Mughal-Persian craftsmanship. After India’s independence in 1947, Parimahal came under the administration of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir.

Pari Mahal or Peer Mahal is open for visitors from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, where the last entry to the garden is till 4:30 PM. Parimahal is closed for public visits on Fridays. There is a nominal entry fee of INR 10 per person for visiting Parimahal in Srinagar. An approximate duration of 2-3 hours is required to completely explore the architecture and stunning seven-terraced garden of Parimahal. The design and layout of Shalimar Bagh is a majestic blend of both Islamic and Persian architecture. Shalimar Bagh is a glamorously beautiful garden adorned with tall chinar trees, cascading water fountains, and vibrant seasonal flowers. The entire garden gives a fairy-tale-like appearance at night when it is splendidly lit by oil lamps (also known as Chini Khanas, a unique feature of Shalimar Bagh among all Mughal Gardens).

The Chashma Shahi, also known as ‘The Royal Spring’ is another Mughal Garden located on the Zabarwan Mountain Range, overlooking the pristine Dal Lake. It is a three-terraced garden, in the middle of which a natural spring flows, which is believed to have medicinal properties. There are three terraces in the garden, with water flowing from the top to the bottom terrace through a series of water ducts, known as ‘chadars’. The main entrance is adorned with five fountains encircling a large pool of water. Chashma Shahi is a treat to visit during the morning or evening hours.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Srinagar Railway Station, which is at a distance of 22 km from Parimahal. There is no public transport available in Srinagar. Private or shared taxis are available from the railway station which take you to various sightseeing destinations.
By Air: The nearest airport to Parimahal is the Sheikh Ul Alam International Airport, Srinagar. It is at a distance of just 24 km from Parimahal. Shared taxis and cabs are readily available from the airport to reach Parimahal.
