Believed to be the temple of Ravana’s wife, Mandodari, the Hatu Mata Temple is a well-known pilgrimage site on the Hatu Peak in the Narkanda region of Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. It is located at an altitude of approximately 3,352 metres above sea level and is renowned for its beautiful wooden architecture, different from many other Hindi temples. Many devotees visit the temple on the first Sunday of Jeth, which is said to be the third month according to the Hindu calendar. The temple is also known for its immense mythological significance. As per the Bhagavad Gita, this temple is said to be where the Pandavas used to prepare their meals while on their agyaat vaas or exile. Having lost their kingdom in a game of dice, the Pandavas were forced into exile for 13 years, of which they were required to remain hidden for one year. It is believed that they spent a portion of their exile on the Hatu peak. Moreover, the two large stones that resemble a challah or an Indian cooking stove are said to be proof of their time here and are called Bheem Chullah.
