Kalsi is a small heritage town located on the banks of the Yamuna in the district of Dehradun. Kalsi is known as a heritage town because of its history which relates back to the great Mauryan emperor Ashoka. There are many hotels in Kalsi for one to stay at. Inscriptions of Ashoka’s Buddhist teachings are carved into rock edicts and are present in Kalsi. Its importance rises as it is the only Ashoka’s Rock edict located in North India. The language used in these edicts is Pali which was his native language. These edicts have inscribed the humane approach of Ashoka to life after the great war. They are drawn from Buddhist texts and inscribed in Ashoka’s own words which reflect his policies of non-violence and total peace. These edicts are said to date back to 450 BC and are carved into quartz stone. The site of these edicts is now preserved and under the care of the Archaeological Department of India.
