1. Frederik Hendrik Museum

Built in 1737 by Mahé de La Bourdonnais, this museum is made upon the ruins of the first Dutch fort. One can easily identify a prison, lodge, bakery and a blacksmith’s workshop structures. This place is also home to the ruins of first Catholic Church ever built in Mauritius. It displays artifacts found during archaeological excavations which are generally from the Dutch colonial period.

2. National History Museum

Built in 1772, this museum is also known as Chateau Gheulde, Maison Robillard or the Naval Museum. It is built in an old colonized French country house of 3 floors. The museum stores a vast collection of prints, paintings, miniature sculptures, and old documents from a famous Mauritian artist, Prosper d’Epinay which speaks a lot about the history of the island.

There are many other objects displayed at different places including Chinese Porcelains dating from the Ming Dynasty, gold and silver coins, buttons, buckles, trading beads recovered from a number of shipwrecks. An attractive feature of this museum is the display of a preserved Mauritian village settlement, where one can get a glimpse of the typical lifestyle of the inhabitants of the rural islands in Mauritius.

3. The Robert Edward Hart Memorial Museum

This museum is the home of the famous Mauritius poet, Robert Edward Hart who lived from 1891 to 1954. This museum is a bungalow made of coral called La Nef. The museum is filled with poet’s property such as furniture, his personal effects and published manuscripts, copies of his personal letters, plays, poetries, speeches, photographs, paintings, his violin, awards and other personal belonging. Everything is preserved in such a manner as if he is still present there.

This museum is built in the honor of the first Prime Minister of the island of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam who also played a key role in Mauritius Independence from Britain. The museum is basically his house comprising of 7 rooms. The house includes his furniture, medical equipment, clothing and certificates.

There is also a photographic exhibition in the museum which aims to highlight the major happening in the life of Sir Prime Minister. In the front courtyard of the house, a statue in bronze of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam is placed sculpted by Russian artist, Alexandrov Moskow in the year 1987.

It is a classic stamp museum named after two rarest postage stamps on this planet- the blue two-pence and the orange-red one penny. This stamp was issued back in 1847, Mauritius being a British colony. If as a history enthusiast you want to know more about Mauritius’ history,y you can have a look at old marine maps, paintings, sculptures, more stamps, old documents and engravings displayed in this museum. Another attraction of this museum is the original statue of Paul and Virginie carved by Prosper D’Epinay in 1881.
