At a distance of approximately 14 kilometres, translating to a 25-minute drive along the Varanasi-Prayagraj Road, lies the Allahabad Fort which was built by Emperor Akbar in 1583. There are several legends surrounding the construction of this fort by Akbar. One local legend claims that Akbar was a Hindu ascetic in his previous birth. Once, by mistake, he consumed a cow’s hair while drinking milk. Horrified at this sin, he had committed suicide. He was then born non-Hindu as a result of this sin and was driven to build a fort at the holy Triveni Sangam.

In another legend, the local Brahmins claim that Akbar repeatedly failed to construct the fort, because its foundation would sink in the sand each time. The emperor was advised that a human sacrifice was required to proceed. A local Brahmin voluntarily stepped up to sacrifice himself, and in return, Akbar granted his heirs, the Prayagwals, the exclusive rights of servicing the pilgrims at the Sangam.
