The Atma Linga placed in Gokarna is believed to have been taken initially by Ravana, the king of Lanka, who carried it to Mount Kailash. This temple of Shiva has been mentioned in several Puranas, like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. King Mayurasharma of the Kadamba dynasty first constructed this temple. Shivratri is the most celebrated festival in the temple, where the Rath Yatra is celebrated, and thousands of people accompany it. 4. Mirjan Fort

Mirjan Fort is located in the west of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka. It is famous for its architectural beauty, and several battles happened near it. According to history, Rani Chennabhairava Devi initially ruled the Mirjan Fort in the 16th century for 54 years. The port at Mirjan, which is 32 km southeast of Karwar, was used for shipping betel nuts, saltpetre, and pepper to Surat. The place was famous for pepper exporting, and hence, the Portuguese named her the pepper queen.
This fort is located on the banks of the Aghanashini River. The entire area of the fort is 10 acres and is built with lateral stones with high walls and bastions. This fort has four entrances and many interlinked wells until the canal works outside the fort. During an excavation between the years 2000 and 2001, the archaeological survey of India found many unearthed laterite structures of the mediaeval period, antique findings like golden coins minted in 1652, canon balls, clay tablets with Islamic inscriptions, iron bullets, coins, designed Earth pots belonging to the Sarpallika dynasty, dumbbells and many more at the fort. This fort is open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on all days.
