Robertson Quay is one of the three wharves on the Singapore River. Running parallel to Alexandra Road is the Singapore River also known as Sungei Singapura in Malay. The Singapore River spans an area of about 3.2 kilometers. Its source is located near the Kim Seng Bridge and it finally empty itself into Marina Bay. In fact, Singapore River travels more than two kilometers further from its original source at Kim Seng Bridge in the form of Alexandra Canal, that goes up to the junction of Commonwealth Avenue.

Originally swamp sand mud flats, Singapore River’s upper reaches were reclaimed in the mid-nineteenth century as a result of the increasing population and commerce of Singapore. In the 1880s, the construction of warehouses and boatyards tool place in both European and Chinese styles. In the 1990s the area was rezoned by the Urban Redevelopment Authority with the purpose of developing new residential areas, hotel, and commercial use.
