About Boat Quay
Boat Quay located on the Singapore River is one of the three subzones of the Singapore River Planning Area. Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay are the other two subzones of this planning area in Singapore. In the 1860s, Boat Quay was the busiest part of the old Port of Singapore and used to take care of the three-quarter of the entire shipping business of this region. A reason behind this was the shape of the Southern part of Singapore River. The south of the river resembled the belly of a carp fish and in the Chinese belief, it was where wealth and prosperity were kept.
This belief leads to the construction of many shophouses in this region expecting to prosper, due to which the area bustled. Although the contribution of Boat Quay to aquatic trade of Singapore has reduced, the shophouses have been preserved and maintained. They are now being used as restaurants, bars, and pubs. This has lead to a shift in the social-economic role of Boat Quay in Singapore from trade and maritime commerce. This place is now more concentrated on tourism and aesthetics for the commercial zones of the Singapore River. The road along the quay is also the named as Boat Quay. This place was converted into a pedestrian mall.
