The history of the Shri Damodar Temple dates back to Mothagam, present-day Margao, in the 16th century. According to historical records, to avoid pillaging, the deity was moved to Zambaulim in the year 1567 during the conquest of the Portuguese. The temple of Margao was one of the first establishments dedicated to Makaji Damodar. It was a large building later used by the Muhammadans when they besieged Salcete. Portuguese captain Diogo Rodrigues burnt to ashes ten temples in Margao, one of which was the Damodar temple. The Desais of Rivona supported the Mahajans by donating land for new temple construction and Vatan. Christianity was introduced in Margao around 1560, and following the establishment of Christianity, the Holy Ghost church was constructed in 1565 on the remains of the Damodar temple.
